Ten Extra-Base Hits Carrry Eastern Connecticut

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team battered three Johnson & Wales University pitchers for six home runs and ten total extra-base hits in a 14-2 victory in the opening game of the Marietta College/BSN SPORTS Invitational at Schaly Field.

Ten of Eastern's 12 hits went for extra bases, with senior No. 8 hitter Preston Irby (Bridgeport) and first-year catcher Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) each homering twice, and seniors Mason Balmer (North Haven) and Zach Donahue (South Windsor) recording one blast each as the Warriors scored 14 runs for the second straight game.

After spotting Johnson & Wales (5-2) a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Eastern (3-5) erupted for the next 11 runs, scoring five in the bottom of the second inning and seven more in its final two at-bats.

Three Eastern pitchers combined on a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk. Making his first start of the year, graduate righty Nathan Furino (East Haven) allowed five hits with five strikeouts and no walks over the first five innings to win his first game in his first decision.

In the five-run fifth inning, Eastern tied the 26-year-old program record by ripping three home runs, with Moser and Irby both launching two-run blasts and Donahue registering a two-out solo home run to close out the scoring.

Senior first baseman Ryan Parent (Southington) had a double and two singles and scored two runs. Senior leftfielder Josh Cofrancesco (Southington) tripled in two runs in the four-run seventh and doubled in the final two runs of the game in a three-run eighth.
