Bison Cruise to a 12-4 Victory Behind Churchill’s Dominant Outing

GEORGETOWN, Texas (3/14/2024) – Junior Clark Churchill earned his first win of the season behind 7.0 innings of work, allowing one run and fanning five batters as the Nichols College baseball team cruised past Southwestern University, 12-4 on Rockwell Family Baseball Field. Senior Brennan Hyde and junior Taj Vera Cruz both homered in the win for the Bison.

Hyde led the offense with three hits including a solo shot in the top of the first inning to open the scoring for the Bison. In the second inning the Pirates answered back with a sacrifice bunt leading to an error that saw the runner from third score, tying the game.

The Bison offenses found life in the third inning, plating six runs on two hits, highlighted by a two RBI double from sophomore Dylan Moran. Nichols tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, to extend the lead to 9-1.

Churchill continued his dominance on the mound for the remainder of the outing, finishing with 7.0 innings, five strikeouts, and allowed one run. Insurance came for the Bison in the seventh inning, as Vera Cruz launched a towering three run home run over the left field scoreboard. This was Vera Cruz's first collegiate home run and extended the Nichols lead to 12-1.

The Pirates added three runs in the final two innings, but the Bison hung on to top the Pirates 12-4.

The Bison (5-3) finished the Texas Spring Break Trip a perfect 3-0 and return to Dudley, Mass. for their home opener on Sunday, March 17th. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
