No. 19 Benedictine Sweeps One-Run Contests

The 19th-ranked Benedictine University baseball team did not trail for long on Sunday, capturing a pair of one-run decisions with a 3-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh and an 8-7 11-inning win over Millikin to move to 11-1 on the year.

Benedictine jumped ahead in the first inning of both contests. DeShawnte Carraway singled home two in the top of the first in the opener. Leading 2-1, Ryan Doubek added a needed insurance run in the sixth with a two-out RBI single. Oshkosh had the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth but Austin Pizer induced a double play to preserve the win. Benedictine and Oshkosh played two games decided by a total of three runs this weekend.

Nick Kosmetatos earned the win against Oshokosh by working six innings and allowing one run. Benedictine tallied 12 hits, all singles, with five players recording multiple hits. Kevin Bushnell logged three hits while Carraway, Doubek, George Betevis and Anthony Lenza all tallied a pair.

Facing the hosts in the second game, Benedictine scored another run in the first when Logan Gregorio homered. The team put two on the board in the second and three in the fourth to lead 6-0. Millikin put six runs on the board in the eighth to open a 7-6 lead but Benedictine came from behind again to force extras when Betevis drilled a solo homer with one out. Justin Nonnenmann homered in the 11th to post the win.

Andrew Kurcz departed with the lead, allowing one run in six innings. Pizer collected the win, working three innings and facing the minimum. The team belted three homers along with a double and a triple among 13 hits. Lenza led the way with three hits. Gregorio was able to drive home three was scoring twice, walking twice and recording a pair of hits. Doubek also finished with two hits including a triple.

Benedictine (11-1) is scheduled to open the home and conference season on Saturday when Lakeland visits for a 12pm doubleheader.
