25 Hits, 24 Runs for RMC Baseball in Win over Methodist

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon baseball team scored 11 times in the bottom of the first and recorded season highs with 25 hits and 24 runs in a 24-6 victory over Methodist on Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) had a leadoff double down the right field line and scored on a single by sophomore Carter Schmidt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's). With one away, junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School) doubled to left to move Schmidt to third. With two away, freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) doubled to left to knock in Schmidt and Harvey to make it 3-0. A double by sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) brought home Wernoski and Duff scored on a single by senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello). A three-run homer by Harvey, his second of the season, capped the 11-run outburst.
  • Wernoski doubled and scored, and sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) added an RBI double and scored in a three-run second as the advantage expanded to 14-0.
  • Senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had a pinch-hit two-run double in the fourth as RMC took a 16-0 lead.
  • After the Monarchs scored five in the top of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Senior Anthony Farmakides (Falls Church, Va./McLean) had a pinch-hit single and scored on a balk, and junior Cole Mallory (Ashland, Va./Camp CC) walked and scored on a fielder's choice as the margin grew to 18-5.
  • Freshman Carter Watson (Baltimore, Md./Centennial) had a leadoff single in the seventh and came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Kolby Birchett (North Prince George, Va./Prince George) to make it 19-5.
  • MU tallied one in the top of the eighth before a grand slam by senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) highlighted a five-run rally to make the final 24-6.

  • RMC has had double-figure hits in four straight games and six of the past seven contests.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a season-high eight doubles. Their previous high was four.
  • Junior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) went 3 for 3 off the bench with a double, one run and one RBI.
  • Seven different Yellow Jackets had two hits.
  • Bush went 2 for 2 with a walk, three runs and one RBI.
  • Watson and freshman Nic Ventrice (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) recorded their first collegiate hits.
  • Junior Gavin Tomlin (Capron, Va./Camp CC) earned the win, going four scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
  • Five pitchers combined to walk one batter, the lowest walk total this season.
  • Freshman Christopher Solomita (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) made his collegiate debut on the mound and recorded his first strikeout.
  • Al Bosdell was behind the plate in his final game as an umpire, finishing a 45-year career as an umpire.
