Oles open Florida trip with 10-1 win over Worcester State

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team began its trip to Florida with a 10-1 victory over Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park.

In just the third-ever meeting between the two programs, St. Olaf (6-6) claimed its first victory in the series with Worcester State (1-6) behind four multi-run innings at the plate. Five Ole pitchers combined to hold the Lancers to an unearned run on six hits, while St. Olaf racked up 13 hits to pick up the win despite leaving 16 runners on base.

St. Olaf's No. 3-7 hitters all had multi-hit games in the victory, including sophomore Breckin Hadley, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run, and three RBI. Sophomore Christopher Woodside, senior Joey Glampe, and sophomore Mason Buck also had two hits, while first year Cole Pleimann went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI. Glampe also knocked in two runs and scored once.

Junior David Scheil pitched the first 3.0 innings for the Oles, allowing an unearned run on three hits with one walk. St. Olaf used four pitchers out of the bullpen and got 3.0 shutout innings from first year Sam Hruska, who earned his first collegiate win after yielding just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Kevin Steel, senior Brock Brumley, and first year Nick Levasseur also tossed shutout innings in relief.

The Oles got scored twice in the bottom of the first to get out to an early lead when Glampe delivered a two-run single to right after coming to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. The Lancers halved their deficit with their lone run of the game in the top of the third, scoring on a throwing error after Tom Halliwell stole third for his second stolen base of the inning.

St. Olaf added to its lead in the next half inning with three runs to open up a 5-1 cushion. Four of the Oles' first five batters of the inning reached, with Pleimann and junior Evan Hammonds recording RBI singles in the inning. The third run of the frame scored on a balk.

In the fifth, St. Olaf put together another three-run inning and did so after the first two batters of the inning struck out. Hadley started the two-out rally with a solo home run to right for the second home run of his collegiate career. Glampe followed with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by sophomore Mason Buck. Pleimann drove in another run with a double after Buck's single.

Hadley closed out the scoring with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth that scored Hammonds and junior Matthew Kulesa. Hruska, Brumley, and Levasseur combined to retire 12 of the final 13 Worcester State batters of the game.

St. Olaf continues its trip with a single game against Augustana College (Ill.) on Friday, March 22 at 12:45 p.m. CDT at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Fla. The Vikings received votes in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.
