Mount Union takes two from Marietta

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team lost a doubleheader at the University of Mount Union on Sunday (Mar. 24) afternoon. Mount Union won the first game, 1-0, and then completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory in game two. Marietta falls to 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 14-4 on the season and 2-0 in the OAC.

Zachary Breeden (1-1) went the distance on the mound for Mount Union in game one. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out nine in the shutout victory. Breeden worked out of trouble early in the game as Marietta left runners in scoring position three times in the first five innings.

The Purple Raiders plated the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andrew Witte reached on a one-out single. Zack Mazza had an infield single moving Witte to second base. Jaired Lehman followed with a double to center, but a perfect relay from Nick Bonnizzio to Alex Richter to Ben Kaplin gunned down Witte at the plate.

With Mazza on at third and Lehman at second, the Pioneers were one out away from getting out of the inning unscathed. However, a wild pitch allowed Mazza to score what would turn out to be the winning run.

Trent Valentine (2-1) threw well but was tagged with the loss. He worked 6.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Gabe Torres gave up one hit and struck out two over the final 2.0 innings.

Marietta threatened again in the eighth when Cael Magill lined a one-out double to left-center. Richter walked and Magill moved to third on a wild pitch. With runners on the corners and one out, Breeden induced a ground ball from Kaplin for an inning-ending double play. The third twin killing of the game for the Purple Raiders.

Magill was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game, including the only extrabase hit.

The Pioneers plated an unearned run in the top of the first inning of game two. Bonnizzio led off with a single and Richter followed with a single through the right side of the infield moving Bonnizzio to third. Mount Union pitcher tried to pick Richter off at first and threw the ball away allowing Bonnizzio to score.

The Purple Raiders took advantage of a Marietta error in the bottom of the first scoring three runs. Chris Viamonte walked and singles from Witte and Mazza loaded the bases with no outs. Lehman singled scoring Viamonte. An error on a ground ball from Luke Ickes allowed both Witte and Mazza to score for a 3-1 lead.

Marietta scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings for a 5-3 lead. Austin Amburgey drove in a run with a ground ball in the sixth and Cole Rieman plated the second with an RBI single. Richter had an RBI double in the seventh and Magill knocked in the final run on a ground ball.

Mount Union bounced back to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead 6-5. Christopher Maurer delivered a pinch hit, two-run single plating the final two runs of the game.

Forrest Havanis (1-2) took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits in 2.0 innings. Jacob Rocky worked the final 1.0 inning and gave up one hits.
