Eastern Conn. Rallies Past No. 8 Salve For 10th Straight

MANSFIELD, Conn. --  The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team scored the final five runs of the game in their last three at-bats to erase a two-run deficit and extend its winning streak to ten with a 6-3 victory over Salve Regina University Wednesday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

Ranked fourth in New England, Eastern (11-5) tied the game, 3-3, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on junior catcher Hank Penders' (Wethersfield) two-out, two-run home run off  relief pitcher Sean Woodruff, went ahead with a run in the seventh on junior centerfielder Ray Leonzi's (Trumbull) sacrifice fly, and added two unearned cushion runs in the eighth on senior shortstop Zach Donahue's (South Windsor) RBI single and a sacrifice fly by senior leftfielder Josh Cofrancesco (Southington).

Junior righty Matthew Wootton (Milford) retired six straight batters on 13 pitches over the final two innings – fanning two and allowing only one ball out of the field – to save junior righty Mike Furgalack's (Southington) first career victory. The third of four Eastern pitchers, Furgalack struck out two and walked two in the seventh inning after Eastern had tied the game on Penders' first home run of the season in the sixth.

Ranked eighth nationally and second in New England, Salve (14-2) had a 13-game winning streak snapped, losing its first game since a 9-5 decision to Stockton University over a month ago in Washington, DC.

The game featured an Eastern team ranks third nationally in slugging and home runs per game against a Salve team which ranks first nationally with a 2.30 ERA. Despite a combined 24-6 record entering play, the teams combined for ten errors, the majority of them coming on a succession of failed pickoff attempts.

The Seahawks led twice in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the third on a leadoff triple by Tyler Petrosino and RBI single by No. 9 hittter Michael Breen, and after the Warriors tied it in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff single by Donahue, an error on a pickoff attempt and two walks, Salve scored single runs in the fourth (an unearned run thanks to a leadoff error) and sixth. In the sixth, chased Eastern first-year lefty starter Chris Torres (West Springfield, MA) after a leadoff single by No. 3 hitter Christian Homa, and Hunter Yaworski's two-out RBI double.

Torres had not allowed an earned run (and only one run overall) in his first 15 2/3 innings over five appearances. In the no-decision, Torres allowed two earned runs (three overall) on six hits and fanned five without a walk in five innings.

Donahue had his third four-hit game of the year, extending his on-base streak to 13. He was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. In his last six games, Donahue is batting .520 (13-for-25) that has raised his average 93 percentage points to .375. Senior third baseman Tiernan Lynch (Easton) had two hits and Penders scored twice in addition to his two-run home run.

Batting .326 as a team, Salve was limited to seven hits by seven different hitters.

Eastern faces WPI Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, MA.
