Myers Sparks 10-Run Eighth for RMC Baseball at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had a pinch-hit single to start the top of the eighth and his two-run single later in the frame put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good in the 10-run inning as the Randolph-Macon baseball team rallied for a 10-6 victory at Mary Washington on Friday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 10, Mary Washington 6

Venue: Dickinson Stadium

Records: RMC 14-5, UMW 17-6

How It Happened:

  • The Eagles loaded the bases with one away in the first, but junior right-hander Gavin Tomlin (Capron, Va./Camp CC) coaxed a pair of foul outs to keep the game scoreless. UMW stranded a pair in the second. The Eagles would score five in the third to start the scoring and added one in the seventh.
  • After being held to five hits over the first seven innings, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Myers had a leadoff pinch-hit single and went to second on a base hit by freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga). Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) reached on an error to load the bases. Junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) reached on an error to plate Myers and Quici. Following a walk to junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School), senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) singled to knock in Schmitt and Lautenschlager as RMC pulled within two at 6-4. Sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) walked to load the bases. Sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) and senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had RBI singles to tie the game. A two-run single by Myers gave RMC its first lead at 8-6. Schmitt had a sacrifice fly and Lautenschlager added an RBI single to cap the 10-run outburst to make it 10-6.
  • Sophomore William Wian (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) pitched four innings of relief with three hits, one run, no walks and three strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory.
