ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Carter Schuma (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) earned his first collegiate win with seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings as the Randolph-Macon baseball team posted a 12-3 victory over No. 22 North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 12, North Carolina Wesleyan 3

Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

Records: RMC 16-6, NCWU 16-8

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a single by freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and scored on a double by sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) as RMC took a 1-0 lead.
  • RMC put up a crooked number in the third. Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) drew walks with one away. A base hit by junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School) loaded the bases. A wild pitch plated Schmitt to make it 2-0. Webb singled to center to knock in Lautenschlager as the advantage grew to 3-0. A wild pitch allowed Harvey to touch home to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets added a pair in the fourth as Schmitt drew a bases loaded walk and freshman Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) scored on a double play to stretch the lead to 6-0.
  • Schuma (1-0) departed after five, allowing three hits and no walks.
  • The Battling Bishops put up two in the top of the sixth before RMC got one back in the bottom of the frame as Bowles had a leadoff single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lautenschlager to make it 7-2.
  • Wernoski and senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) were both hit by pitches and scored in the seventh as RMC led 9-2.
  • NCWU scored its final run in the top of the eighth before the Yellow Jackets completed the scoring in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) had a leadoff single and went to second when Schmitt walked. Quici was erased at third on a fielder's choice by Lautenschlager, while Schmitt went to third on the errant throw to first. Harvey singled to knock in Schmitt, while Lautenschlager scored and Harvey reached third when the base hit was overrun. Webb's sacrifice fly knocked in Harvey to make the final score 12-3.
