Baseball Tops William Paterson Behind Late-Inning Surge

Montclair, NJ  The #18/20 Montclair State University baseball team used a late-inning surge to top William Paterson 8-5 on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Red Hawks (20-4, 2-1 NJAC) fell behind in the second inning as the Pioneers plated five runs. After a leadoff walk and a double, a sacrifice fly brought in the opening tally of the contest. The visitors used an RBI single and two errors to bring in four more runs to open up a five-run margin.
  • Montclair immediately answered in the frame, as Jason Moore singled and Max McLoughlin reached on a throwing error to set up two runners in scoring position with two outs. During the next at-bat, Reece Malek reached on a fielding error that allowed both runners to come home.
  • William Paterson placed a runner on third in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Evan Wood and Toby Smith each ended the frame to prevent the scoring. With two runners on in the top of the seventh, Tyler Cirone entered the contest and punched out back-to-back Pioneers to end the stanza.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, Miles Feaster doubled to right field, plating two runs to make it a one-run game. Sam Angelo used a sacrifice fly during the next at-bat to level the contest at five.
  • Montclair loaded the bases again in the eighth, and Zach Stearns doubled to right field to drive in two runners to give the Red Hawks their first lead of the contest. Feaster singled to right field during the next at-bat to bring home the final marker of the afternoon.
