Can’t Hold Off No. 20/18 MSU Late, 7-5

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-15, 1-3 NJAC) carried a lead into the sixth inning but couldn't hold off No. 20/18 Montclair State (21-4, 3-1 NJAC), 7-5, April 5 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A two-out double plated a pair of unearned runs for the Red Hawks during the top of the first inning.
  • WP answered with three runs during its first at-bat. Senior center fielder Jake Lutz, junior left fielder Austin Jack and freshman designated hitter Ty Kobylakiewicz opened the frame with walks, and junior first baseman Gio Aresta delivered a two-out triple to right, clearing the bases for a 3-2 lead.
  • The Pioneers added two more in the second. Junior third baseman Ruven Pino drew a leadoff base on balls and later advanced to second on a two-out passed ball. Jack had an infield base hit, putting runners on the corners, and he stole second before Kobylakiewicz singled up the middle, making it a 5-2 game.
  • MSU scored five times in the sixth, stringing together four consecutive hits, a hit by pitch, bases-load walk and two-run double for a 7-5 edge.
  • WP had the go-ahead run at the plate during both the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't capitalize.
