CWRU Sweeps Doubleheader against Brandeis on Saturday

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team picked up two more wins on Saturday with a sweep of a doubleheader against Brandeis University at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, winning the first game 8-0 before completing the sweep with a 7-3 win in the second contest.

CWRU has now won five straight games and 12 of their last 13 games to improve to 20-6 overall for the season. The Spartans also remained in sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association standings with a 6-1 conference record. Brandeis fell to 4-16 overall with an 0-3 league mark.

The Spartans were led by junior right fielder Nick Harms, who finished the day five-for-six at the plate with four runs, two RBIs, two walks, a home run, and two doubles. Meanwhile, the Spartans' pitching staff held the Judges scoreless in 17 of the 18 innings and struck out 28 batters during the two games while walking just four.

Game 1 - CWRU 8, Brandeis 0
The Spartans jumped out to a big first-inning lead behind a grand slam from graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen and sophomore Archer Stankowski and first-year Zach Barnes combined for a shutout in an 8-0 win over the Judges in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Stankowski, who improved to a team-best 5-1 with the win while lowering his ERA to 2.77, allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out nine batters over six innings of work. He held the Judges without a hit until the sixth inning of the game before giving up a single to lead off the frame and left with a 7-0 lead after throwing just 85 pitches.

The first five batters of the game reached base for the Spartans, with junior left fielder Logan Andreyko leading off the game with a double and eventually scoring the first run of the contest on a wild pitch. CWRU loaded the bases for Camphausen, who deposited a ball over the fence in right-center field to extend the Spartans' lead to 5-0. It was his fourth home run in his last four games and his team-leading ninth of the season.

CWRU added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on sacrifice flies from first-year shortstop Nate Arterburn and senior designated hitter Zack Carinci to go ahead 7-0. In the bottom of the seventh, graduate student third baseman James Powers crossed the plate on a double play to increase the CWRU lead to eight runs.

Barnes closed out the game by allowing just two hits and a walk over three scoreless innings of work, striking out four batters to pick up his second save of the campaign.

Camphausen finished the game two-for-three with the home run and four RBIs, while Harms added a two-for-three contest with a walk, two runs, and a double.

Brandeis starter Cooper Gavin suffered the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the season.

Game 2 - CWRU 7, Brandeis 3
First-year lefty Quinn Saunders struck out 10 batters in five-and-a-third innings and Harms went three-for-three with two RBIs and his sixth home run of the season in an 8-3 win over the Judges in the second game of the doubleheader.

It marked the third time in his last four starts that Saunders, who improved to 3-0 on the year with a 4.88 ERA, struck out at least 10 batters in the outing. He surrendered just two runs on three hits and two walks in the outing to claim the victory.

The Spartans struck early again, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning when Andreyko crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Harms followed with a solo home run. Harms later doubled in a run in the third inning, graduate student left fielder Franco Alonso plated first-year third baseman Tyler Stillson with a single in the fourth, and graduate student catcher Jack Anderson scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to put the Spartans ahead 5-0 heading into the sixth.

Saunders held the Judges scoreless into the sixth inning, leaving the game with two runners in scoring position and one out in the frame. Junior Jackson Brewer entered the contest, allowing both inherited runners to score in addition to a third run, but recorded a strikeout to end the inning with the potential game-tying run at the plate. Brewer went on to pitch scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, and CWRU added two more runs on a dropped fly ball to left field with the bases loaded, extending their advantage to 7-3. Senior Tyler Horvath retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the victory.

Harms finished the game three-for-three with two runs, two RBI, a home run, a double, and a walk. Sophomore Matt Trout and Alonso each added RBIs in the game as well.

Andrew Tringe, who started and pitched the first six innings for the Judges, suffered the loss to fall to 0-5 on the campaign.

The Spartans and the Judges will conclude their four-game series on Sunday morning with a single game starting at 9:30 a.m.
