Baseball sweeps Franciscan to secure seven wins in six days

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team notched its sixth and seventh wins in the last six days with a doubleheader sweep of Franciscan on Wednesday at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex.

The Jackets took advantage of four Franciscan errors to score seven unearned runs en route to a 10-4 victory in game one. Hudson Pincavitch (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) spun eight innings of one-run ball while the Jacket bats provided two runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings in a 7-3 victory in game two.

Waynesburg moves to 17-10 on the year and 10-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action. The Jackets surpassed their conference win total from last season with nine games remaining on their league schedule this spring. Waynesburg's seven game winning streak is the program's longest in the last 20 seasons.

Game 1 – Waynesburg 10, Franciscan 4

The Jackets took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Waynesburg scored on a wild pitch and scored a pair of unearned runs on a Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) RBI single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gavin Pratt. The lead grew to 4-0 in the third as a throwing error allowed Garrett Comer (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) to score.

The Barons plated two runs on back-to-back RBI double in the fourth. Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Comer to give the Jackets a 5-2 edge.

Franciscans tallied a run in the sixth before the Jackets added three more unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bell and Burgdolt had run-scoring doubles in the frame as Waynesburg's lead grew to 9-3.

A solo home run for Franciscan in the top of the seventh was matched by an RBI groundout for the Jackets.

Matthew Corte-Gaskil (Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth with four strikeouts to close out the 10-4 win.

Five Jackets notched a multi-hit game and eight different players scored in the victory. Comer went 3-for-5, Bell doubled, tripled and scored twice and Lane Ours (Moorefield, W.Va. / Moorefield) had a double and two runs scored.

Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna earned his second win of the season. He allowed three earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. The Jacket starter struck out five, walked four and allowed six hits.

Game 2 – Waynesburg 7, Franciscan 3

The Barons threatened early as a single, a sacrifice bunt and an error put runners on second and third with one out in the first. Pincavitch executed a pickoff throw to second base and the Jackets were able to throw out the runner on third who attempted to scamper home. Pincavitch stranded the remaining Franciscan runner on third to escape the first inning.

The Jackets took the lead with two runs in the first inning. Bell singled in Mount and Ours walked with the bases loaded.

Waynesburg's lead grew to 6-1after adding two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Mount had an RBI single and another run scored on a throwing error when Mount stole second base. Ours cranked a two-run homer in the fifth. Franciscan scratched across a run in the third as the Jackets led 6-1 after five.

Franciscan scored a pair of runs before Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) closed out the ballgame with the Jackets emerging as 7-3 winners.

Ours went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Bell was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Mount and Comer each had two hits, scored once and drove in a run apiece.

Pincavitch earned his first collegiate victory. He allowed one run on seven hits in 8.0 innings.

The Jackets host Washington & Jefferson in a match up of the top two teams in the PAC standings on Saturday at 1:00 p.m..
