CENTER VALLEY, PA. – The William Paterson baseball team (7-17) was upended by host DeSales (13-13), 6-4, April 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A single, walk and double handed the Bulldogs a 2-0 first-inning lead.
- The Pioneers tied things up during the top of the fourth inning. Freshman first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz started the frame with a base hit to left and junior designated hitter Connor Luckie walked before a groundout advanced them a base. Junior right fielder Gio Aresta delivered an RBI-groundout and Luckie later scored on a wild pitch, making it a 2-2 game.
- WP took a 4-2 lead during its next at-bat. Junior catcher Austin Jack reached on a one-out error, junior third baseman Tyler Ruban singled, Kobylakiewicz sent an RBI-double to left and Luckie lifted a sac fly to center.
- DeSales used three base hits and a groundout to score twice and knot the score at 4-4 after six innings.
- A solo homer, single, error, groundout and sac fly made it a 6-4 Bulldog lead in the seventh.
- The Pioneers had the bases loaded with two outs during the top of the ninth inning, but a foulout ended the comeback threat.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Kobylakiewicz finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Aresta and Luckie each contributed an RBI.
- Freshman Kevin Reiner gave up two runs, five hits and three walks with one strikeout during 4.0 innings of action.
- Junior Nick Durso pitched 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out one.
- Senior Nick Nielson surrendered two hits and two runs (one earned) in 1.0 inning (0-1).
- Junior Matt Lemieux tossed 1.0 inning of shutout relief.
