Harms Homers Twice as #22 CWRU Sweeps Home Doubleheader against Kenyon

Case Western Reserve University junior right fielder Nick Harms hit a two-run home run in each game of a doubleheader on Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Spartans ran their winning streak to a season-high eight games with a sweep of Kenyon College, defeating the Owls 16-6 in eight innings in the first game and 5-1 in the second contest at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The Spartans, winners of 15 of their last 16 games, improved to 23-6 overall with the two wins, while Kenyon fell to 16-9. It marked the fifth time this season that the Spartans have swept a doubleheader. The team also improved to 12-0 at Nobby's Ballpark this season.

Harms and graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen each drove in five runs apiece over the doubleheader, while graduate student catcher Jack Anderson went five-for-eight with six runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Game 1 - CWRU 16, Kenyon 6 (8 innings)
The Spartans scored 14 runs over the final four innings of the first game of the doubleheader to overcome an early three-run deficit and defeat the Owls 16-6 in eight innings.

CWRU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but cut the Kenyon lead back to a run in the third on a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded from Camphausen. Kenyon scored two runs in the top of the fourth to increase its lead back to three, 5-2, but in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI double by graduate student third baseman James Powers and a sacrifice fly by Camphausen got the Spartans back within a run, 5-4.

Kenyon scored again in the top of the sixth to push its lead back to two runs, 6-4, but the Spartans broke the game open in the bottom of the frame, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to go ahead 10-6. Senior designated hitter Zack Carinci scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Anderson plated first-year shortstop Nate Arterburn and tied the score at 6-6. With Powers at the plate, junior left fielder Logan Andreyko scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and an RBI double by Powers followed by a two-run home run by Harms, his seventh of the season, gave the Spartans a 10-6 advantage.

CWRU batted around again in the seventh, scoring three runs, including two on a two-RBI single by Carinci. The Spartans began the eighth with a walk and back-to-back singles, including a run-scoring hit from Powers. Harms made the score 15-6 with a run-scoring groundout and Camphausen followed with an RBI double to put an early end to the game due to the ten-run rule.

Camphausen finished the game two-for-five with a double and four RBIs, while Powers added a three-for-four showing with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles, a walk, and his team-leading 12th stolen base of the year. Anderson went three-for-four with four runs, an RBI, a walk, and a steal. Andreyko also registered a multiple-hit game, going two-for-four with two walks and three runs.

As a team, CWRU totaled 14 hits and drew nine walks in the contest while also taking advantage of three errors by the Owls.

Senior southpaw Reece Marley started and struck out six batters in a no-decision, leaving the game in the sixth with two outs and the Spartans trailing 6-4. First-year Zack Barnes recorded the final out of the sixth, and after the Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the inning, did not allow a run to secure the win.

Barnes, who improved to 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA for the campaign, pitched the final two-and-a-third innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out three batters. Reliever Edwin Groff (one of eight pitchers used in the game by the Owls) suffered the loss for Kenyon, dropping to 0-1 for the season.

Game 2 - CWRU 5, Kenyon 1
An early Spartan lead helped back another strong start by first-year lefty Quinn Saunders as the Spartans completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in the second game of the day.

Saunders pitched six shutout innings in the game, holding the Owls scoreless on two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts, and did not allow a runner past second base in the outing. He improved to 4-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.90, and has now struck out a team-high 57 batters in 30 innings this year.

The Spartans took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Owls in the bottom of the first as Harms hit a pop-up to short with two outs that was dropped, allowing Anderson to score the opening run of the game. Harms went on to steal second base and score a batter later on a Camphausen single. CWRU increased its lead to 3-0 in the second when first-year third baseman Tyler Stillson led the inning off with a double and scored on a double play.

Saunders left the game after six innings with the Spartans leading 3-0 still, and junior Jackson Brewer followed with a scoreless seventh, striking out two batters in the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Harms homered to straight-away centerfield with one out and a runner on second, his eighth of the campaign, to extend the CWRU lead to 5-0.

Junior Kyle Gearding worked out of trouble in the eighth, despite allowing a run to score on a double play that set the score at 5-1. Gearding loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Anderson took over on the mound to induce a groundout for the final out of the game and notch his team-leading fifth save in as many appearances this season.

In addition to collecting the save, Anderson went two-for-four with a pair of runs scored. Stillson went three-for-four with a run scored and his third double of the campaign, and Andreyko collected his second multiple-hit performance of the day, finishing the contest two-for-four.

Kenyon starter Jackson Niedel suffered the loss, dropping to 2-3 for the season.

The Spartans will play two more non-conference games tomorrow, traveling to Delaware, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. meeting against Ohio Wesleyan before heading to Granville, Ohio later in the day for a 5:30 p.m. contest against second-ranked Denison.
