The 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team recorded program high-water marks for runs and hits in a single game in a 28-3 win at Ohio Wesleyan in the team's first game of the day on Sunday in Delaware, Ohio, before driving to Granville, Ohio where the team suffered an 8-5 loss to second-ranked Denison University to snap its season-long nine game winning streak.

The Spartans now stand at 24-7 overall following the split on Sunday and have won 16 of their last 18 games.

CWRU homered four times in the first game on Sunday and now have 32 home runs this season, surpassing the previous school single-season record of 30 set in 2019.

Game 1 - No. 22 CWRU 28, Ohio Wesleyan 3
The Spartans set a program record with 28 runs scored and matched a program record with 24 hits in a 28-3 win at Ohio Wesleyan University during the team's first game of the day at Littick Field in Delaware, Ohio.

The 28 runs scored by the Spartans surpassed the previous program record of 27, set at Brandeis on April 21 of last year. It marked the third time in program history that CWRU has registered 24 hits in a game, matching the records set by the team on February 23, 2014 against Franklin and Marshall and March 13, 2019 against Roger Williams.

Twelve different CWRU players recorded at least one hit in the game, while 13 Spartans scored at least one run during the offensive outburst.

First-year Tyler Stillson led the way for the Spartans both at the plate and on the mound. He finished the contest two-for-three with a grand slam, six RBIs, and two runs scored, while also starting and earning the win in the game to improve to 5-0 for the season. He allowed just three runs on four hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts in the game.

Graduate student third baseman James Powers went three-for-five with a home run, a double, three runs scored, and six runs batted in. Graduate student left fielder Franco Alonso was four-for-four with three runs, two RBIs, a home run, and a double. Senior second baseman Zack Carinci added a four-for-five showing with two doubles, a run, and three RBIs, and graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen finished the contest two-for-three with a home run, three runs and three RBIs.

The Spartans took a 3-0 lead three batters into the game after back-to-back singles to start the game by junior center fielder Logan Andreyko and graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, followed by a three-run opposite field home run over the wall in left center field by Powers, his second of the year. Two batters later, Camphausen mashed a solo home run to left field, his 10th of the year to move within one of the program's single-season record. CWRU added on two more runs later in the inning on a two-run single by first-year shortstop Nate Arterburn to give Stillson a 6-0 lead before he took the mound.

Stillson allowed three runs in the first but the Spartans increased their lead to 10-3 in the second, scoring on an RBI single from Camphausen, an RBI double by Carinci that he also scored on after an error, and a solo home run from Alonso, his third of the campaign. CWRU went on to score 13 runs during the third inning to blow the game open and take a 23-3 lead. Stillson drove in six runs during the inning with a grand slam (his third home run of the year) and a two-run single, while Powers plated three with a two-RBI double and a run-scoring single.

CWRU added three more runs in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to 26-3. In the top of the sixth, a RBI single from Carinci matched the program record for runs scored in a game, and senior first baseman Tim Demetris scored on a wild pitch during the next at bat to set a new program high-water mark and extend the team's lead to 28-3.

After Stillson completed five innings on the mound, senior Patrick O'Connor and first-year Shawn Liang each added a scoreless inning of relief to secure the victory with the Spartans claiming a win in seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Ohio Wesleyan starter Josh Ferreira suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season, as the Battling Bishops dropped to 13-13 overall.

Game 2 - No. 2 Denison 8, No. 22 CWRU 5
The Spartans held a lead on three separate occasions over the first three innings in their second game of the day, but a five-run third inning for the Big Red proved to be the difference maker in an 8-5 loss to second-ranked Denison.

Andreyko opened the scoring for the Spartans in the second game, leading off the contest with a single, moving to third on an error, and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Anderson. Denison scored two in the bottom of the first to go ahead, but the Spartans tied the game in the second on back-to-back doubles by Camphausen and Carinci to start the inning and took the lead on a one-out run-scoring single by first-year center fielder Matt Trout. Denison evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second, but the Spartans answered again, loading the bases with no outs in the third before Alonso drove in a pair with a single to give CWRU a 5-3 advantage.

However, the Spartans' lead was once again short-lived, as the Big Red scored five runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 8-5.

Five-and-two-thirds shutout innings from the Spartan bullpen helped keep the game within reach for CWRU. Junior Jackson Brewer did not allow an earned run in his four-and-a-third innings on the mound, giving up just two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Senior Tyler Horvath followed with an inning and a third of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Powers, Camphausen, and Trout each finished the game with two hits apiece for the Spartans, who totaled nine hits in the contest.

CWRU sophomore starter Archer Stankowski, who allowed all nine runs in the game, suffered the loss to drop

The Spartans will resume their University Athletic Association schedule next weekend when the team travels to Staten Island, New York for a four-game series against New York University, starting on Friday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. CWRU will enter the series with a 7-1 conference record and a three-and-a-half game lead over WashU for first place in the league.
