Offense helps W&J overpower Waynesburg in PAC sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team rolled up 31 runs on 30 hits to power past visiting Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Ross Memorial Park.

W&J served as the road team in both games due to a site change in the conference doubleheader and took advantage of the opportunity to bat first.

The Presidents scored early and often in both games to register the key conference sweep over the Yellow Jackets, who entered the day second in the conference and riding high after a seven-game winning streak.

W&J improves to 10-0 in PAC play and 16-7 overall. The Presidents have won 12-straight games overall. Waynesburg drops to 10-3 in the PAC and 17-12 overall.

Game 1 - W&J 14, Waynesburg 1 (7 Innings)

The Presidents set a strong pace early, scoring two runs in the opening frame on a two-run home run by Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio / Wellington School). With two outs, Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) drew a walk and scored on the long ball by Zaas.

Anthony Pass (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) would get the start on the mound for the Presidents. Pass would make quick work in the bottom of the frame, inducing two fly outs and a ground out to retire the first three batters in the lineup for the Yellow Jackets.

W&J would add another two to the scoreboard in the top of the second as they put two runners on and moved them on a sacrifice bunt from freshman right fielder, Andrew Miko (Portage, Pa./Portage), which put them in scoring position. This would allow for Ben Schuler (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) to score them on an infield single and sacrifice fly to center in the next two at bats.

This elevated the score to 4-0 heading into the bottom of the frame where Pass would record his second straight three up and three down inning of the game.

Lutz smacked a solo home run in the third to tack on another. The home run, Lutz's third of the season, made it 5-0.

Despite the Waynesburg leadoff batter recording their first hit of the game for the Yellow Jackets, Pass would strikeout the following two batters and induce a fly out to center to get out of the third unscathed.

A hit by pitch and drawn walk from Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills) and Lutz respectively would put two runners on the base paths for the Presidents in the fourth. Garth would later score on a RBI groundout by Zaas. Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) would clear the bases with a two-run home run in the next at bat to put the Red & Black ahead 8-0.

Two more strikeouts from Pass and a fly out to centerfield would leave two stranded for the Yellow Jackets to end the fourth.

In the top of the fifth inning, Miko would score on a throwing error by the catcher and Schuler would score on an RBI double from Lutz to account for the Presidents two runs. A strikeout and heads up double play by junior shortstop LaDuca would get the Presidents out of the inning with the shut out en tact.

W&J would put two on in the sixth with one hit but come up scoreless heading into the bottom of the frame. Waynesburg tallied what would be there only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a ground rule double to set the score at 10-1.

The Red & Black would put up four in the top of the seventh. The first run would score on an RBI double from Zaas followed by an RBI single from Stern.

Brody Bartenstein (Corning, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) and Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) would follow their lead with another RBI double and RBI single, respectively.

Pass would end the game strong with a three up three down inning to end the game and pickup the win after a full seven-inning effort. Pass struck out eight batters, walked two and allowed just one run on six hits. Pass is now 5-1 on the mound this season.

Stern and Lutz paced the Presidents with three hits apiece. Lutz was just a single shy of batting a cycle as he tallied a double, triple, and home run during the 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Lutz scored three ties in the win. Zaas finished with four RBI and three runs scored in game one.

Game Two – W&J 17, Waynesburg 4 (7 Innings)

Both teams would score early in the game with W&J scoring two in the first on a two-run double by Stern. Waynesburg answered back in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

The following inning would go scoreless both teams as the score remained 2-1 heading into the third.

W&J would score four times in the frame. Run-scoring hits by Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Fairport Harding), Jake Stiehl (Reston, Va./South Lakes), and an error by the third baseman that resulted in another runner touching home for the Presidents. The four-run inning made it 6-1.

A three-run homer from Waynesburg senior outfielder Lane Ours would give the visitors some home, as the blast cut the deficit to 6-4 heading into the fourth inning.

However, the Presidents essentially ended all hopes with a six-run inning in the fourth. The outburst swelled the Red and Black advantage to 12-4. The six-run rally was fueled by RBI hits from Zaas, Stern, Stiehl, and Eli Owens (Alexandria, Va. / West Potomac).

The next two inning were dry for both teams as the score remained 12-4 heading into the top of the seventh.

The Presidents were poised to score as the first three batters loaded the bases. Zaas would crack a hard-hit ball up the middle to record a two-run single and push the lead to 14-4. John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) would keep things rolling with an RBI double down the line to tack on another run. Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) would pinch hit and bring the next run in with a sacrifice fly to center. Ryan Ross (Fredericktown, Pa./Beth-Center) would pinch hit next and drive in what would be the final run of the inning for the Red & Black on an RBI single through the left side.

The Presidents recorded the final three outs for their second mercy rule win of the day. W&J finished game two with six doubles.

Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) would take the win in the circle after pitching the final three innings. DiMatteo allowed just two hits and struck out five during his scoreless outing.

Zaas tacked on three more hits, three more RBI and three more runs scored. Stern and Stiehl tied for the team-high with four RBI apiece.

On Deck: The Presidents return to action next in a home double header against Point Park in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
