NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (8-23, 3-9 NJAC) built an early advantage and cruised to an 11-3 victory at Rutgers-Newark (16-16, 1-11 NJAC) April 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- WP struck twice during its first at-bat. Senior center fielder Jake Lutz and freshman third baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz walked, advanced a base on a wild pitch and scampered home when junior first baseman RJ Mehnert singled to right field.
- The Pioneers made it a 10-0 score in the second. Junior second baseman Ruven Pino provided a base hit up the middle and junior shortstop Tom Radigan was issued a base on balls, followed by a Lutz single and error for a 4-0 score. Junior catcher Austin Jack and Kobylakiewicz walked to load the bags, leading to an RBI-single by junior right fielder Gio Aresta, a run-scoring wild pitch, walks for Mehnert and junior left fielder Christian Hay, an RBI-fielder's choice from junior designated hitter Tyler Ruban, a Pino bases on balls and a two-run base hit to center by Radigan.
- Ruban singled in Pino, who reached via a base hit to left, for an 11-0 margin in the fifth.
- The Scarlet Raiders strung together three singles and a sac fly for two scores during the home half of the fifth.
- A bases-loaded groundout finished the scoring for Rutgers-Newark in the sixth inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Radigan went 3-for-3 while posting three RBI and a run scored.
- Mehnert finished 2-for-3, adding two RBI and a run. Lutz and Pino had multi-hit games.
- Senior Ian Metzger pitched 6.0 innings, scattering three runs, 10 hits and a walk while registering four strikeouts (2-5).
- Junior Nick Durso worked 3.0 scoreless frames, striking out a career-best eight batters for his first save.
