Hampden-Sydney Sweeps Doubleheader At Averett 16-4, 17-6

DANVILLE, Va. -- Freshman Jake Moore (Dry Fork) had five hits and two RBIs in game one, while senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach), along with sophomores Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) and Jack Wilson (Petersburg), each had three RBIs in game two, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a sweep of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Averett University on Saturday afternoon in Danville. Sophomore Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) gained the pitching victory in the 16-4 win in the opener, while classmate Jake Williams (Chesapeake) earned the mound triumph in the 17-6 win in the nightcap for the visiting Tigers (14-17, 8-11) against the host Cougars (8-25, 4-14). The Garnet & Grey posted season-highs of 17 runs and 16 RBIs in nightcap, and tied their season-high with 17 hits in opener, while keeping their conference tournament hopes alive, as well.

In game one, H-SC scored 16 runs on 17 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, four runs in the second, one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, three runs in the seventh, one run in the eighth and four runs in the ninth. AU scored four runs on 10 hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the third inning and two runs in the seventh.

In the first, Moore (5-5, 2 RBIs) singled to center field with one out, stole second and third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by sophomore Matthew Arnold (Danville) (RBI) for a 1-0 advantage.

In the second, Farr (1-5, RBI) reached on a fielding error and later scored on a throwing error by the pitcher that allowed senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-3, 2 RBIs) to reach base. Junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (3-5, 2 RBIs) reaching on another fielding error, and both Butler and Masterson crossed the plate on a two-run single through the left side by freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-3, 2 RBIs), and Howell scored via a ground ball RBI off the bat of junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-5, 2 RBIs) to make it 5-0.

In the fourth, Wilson (1-4, RBI) led off with a single to left field, stole second base and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Moore for a 6-2 lead.

In the fifth, junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (3-6) doubled down the right field line to open the at-bat and crossed the plate when Farr followed with an RBI single through the right side. Farr scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Butler to make it 8-2.

In the seventh, Masterson drew a lead-off walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scoring via a ground ball RBI from Wilson. Howell, who also walked and stole second, scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Harris, and Harris crossed the plate on an RBI single through the left side by Moore for an 11-2 advantage.

In the eighth, Lancaster led-off with a double to right field and scored on a two-out, run-scoring single through the right side by Butler to make it 12-4.

In the ninth, sophomore Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) walked as a pinch-hitter to begin the frame and advanced to second base on a wild pitch ahead of a walk to sophomore Aidan Conway (Chesapeake), and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball, before senior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) walked, as well, to load the bases. Sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond) (RBI) also walked to force Powell across the plate, and Conway scored when junior Jahiem Green (Stafford) (1-1, RBI) singled up the middle as a pinch-hitter. Burnette and Fitzpatrick crossed the plate via a two-run single to left field by Masterson to provide for the final 12-run margin of victory.

Miller-Bopp (3-1) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering eight hits and four runs, all earned, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) tossed the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored 17 runs on 11 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, one run in the sixth, nine runs in the seventh, four runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth. AU scored six runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs in the third and one run in the eighth.

In the second, Farr (2-4, 3 RBIs) was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to third base on a double down the left field line by Masterson (1-5). Freshman Trey Shrock (Appomattox) (RBI) followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to center field to score Farr, and Howell (2-3, 2 RBIs) plated Masterson with an RBI single to right field to bring the visitors within 3-2.

In the sixth, Arnold (1-4, RBI) singled through the right side to begin the at-bat and advanced to second base on an infield single by Lancaster (1-4), and both runners moved up another base on a wild pitch. Arnold scored on a ground ball RBI off the bat of Farr as the Garnet & Grey closed to within 5-3.

In the decisive seventh, Howell led off with a single to right field, advanced to second base when Wilson (1-5, 3 RBIs) was hit by a pitch, and the bases were loaded after Harris (2-4, 2 RBIs) reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. Franks-Pollock (1-2, 3 RBIs) drew a walk to score Howell, and Wilson scored when Arnold reached on a fielding error. Lancaster reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases again, and both Franks-Pollock and Arnold crossed the plate on a two-run single through the left side by Farr. Shrock drew a two-out walk to load the bases yet-again, and Lancaster scored when Howell followed with another walk. Farr and Shrock crossed the plate on a two-run double down the left field line by Wilson, and Howell and Wilson scored on a two-run triple to right field by Harris for a 12-5 advantage.

In the eighth, Farr singled to center field to open the frame and advanced to second base when Masterson reached on a fielding error. Farr later scored with one out on a ball four wild pitch to Burnette, and Masterson scored when Wilson reached on a fielder's choice. Harris reached on a throwing error, and both he and Wilson crossed the plate on a two-run single to center field by Franks-Pollock to make it 16-5.

In the ninth, Lancaster walked to lead-off and later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Conway (RBI) to provide for the final 11-run margin of victory.

Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 1.0 inning, allowing five hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) tossed 2.0 innings, yielding two hits and two runs, unearned, with one strikeout and three walks. Williams (2-2) followed with 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win, scattering two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Hank Blanton (Midlothian) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and one run, unearned, with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed the final scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout and no walks.
