Marietta downs Ohio Wesleyan 7-2

DELAWARE, Ohio — Marietta College wrapped up a four-game road swing with a 7-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan University Sunday (April 28) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 19-17 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 18-16 overall.

Jacob Rocky (4-1) had another stellar start on the mound. The junior, who was named Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week last week, scattered three hits and allowed just one unearned run over 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Marietta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Ben Kaplin drew a bases-loaded walk. The Battling Bishops tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth when a Pioneer throwing error led to an OWU run.

The Pioneers took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Alex Richter was hit by a pitch for the 23rd time this season setting the Marietta College single season record. He moved to second on a single from Kaplin. Richter stole third and scored when the throw got away. Later in the inning Cole Yeager drew a bases-loaded walk giving Marietta a 3-1 lead.

Marietta extended its lead with four more runs in the seventh. Kail Hill plated two runs with a single through the left side of the infield. Nick Bonnizzio and Richter both drew bases-loaded walks forcing in the third and fourth runs of the inning.

Ohio Wesleyan made it 7-2 with a solo home run from Edrick Padilla in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In addition to Rocky, Zach Marzetz and Jared Bees pitched in the game for the Pioneers. Marzetz worked 0.1 innings and allowed one hit and walked one. Bees earned his first save of the season throwing the final 3.2 innings. He gave up one run on one hit and struck out two.

With a conference doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, Ohio Wesleyan used nine different pitchers in the game. Jacob Lowery started and worked 2.0 innings. He allowed no runs on one hit. Alex Casper (1-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings.

Trent Valentin led the Pioneer offense going 3-for-5 with one run scored. Bonnizzio extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a pair of singles and one RBI. Jeremy Tonelli and Hill each had two hits. Hill scored twice and drove in two runs.

Marietta concludes the regular season at Capital University next Sunday (May 5). The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
