Plattsburgh State Athletics News: Baseball Cruises to 8-1 Non-Conference Win Over SUNY Canton on Thursday

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team won their 23rd game of the season on Thursday, the highest win total since 2010 when they won 30 games, as they defeated SUNY Canton 8-1 at Chip Cummings Field. Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) threw six excellent innings to earn the win, striking out a career-high nine batters in his third start of the season.

Kohn allowed just five hits, giving up one unearned run, earning his second win of the season on the mound. Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was 2-3 on the day, driving in two runs and scoring once, while Ben Catrambone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) was also 2-3, scoring two runs. Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) finished 1-2 with two runs scored, driving in a run, and walking twice. Eric Agan (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Ty Nelson (Rosedale, N.Y./Springfield Gardens), and Justin Sargent (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each threw a scoreless inning for Plattsburgh State.

The Cards improve to 23-13 on the season and will next play VTSU-Castleton on Saturday, May 4 at Chip Cummings Field in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. SUNY Canton falls to 3-29 with the loss and wraps up their season this weekend at Eastern Nazarene.

Plattsburgh State wasted no time taking the lead, as Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Cremin to give the Cards a 1-0 advantage.

Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) walked to lead off the third and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead through three innings.

After an unearned run crossed in the fourth for Canton, Plattsburgh State added three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away from the Kangaroos.

The fifth began with the bases loaded as Catrambone singled, Kornblau walked, and Cremin also singled. After a pitching change, Caldwell brought home Catrambone with a sacrifice fly to center, and after another walk, Max Frank (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) picked up his first career-hit and RBI with a single to left. Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) followed with a sacrifice fly of his own, scoring Cremin, putting the Cards up 5-1.

The Cards added three more runs in the sixth, with Caldwell picking up an RBI single and coming around to score along with Cremin in the next at-bat after an error by the Canton left fielder to give Plattsburgh the 8-1 lead.

The final three innings went by quickly as Agan, Nelson, and Sargent made quick work of the Canton offense, allowing just one baserunner each to give Plattsburgh State the 8-1 win.

Kayden Guerin took the loss for Canton, allowing just one run in two innings, while Nick Barone had two hits and a run scored for the 'Roos.
