The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its second season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the ninth Team of the Week of the 2013 season.
Through games of April 8-14, 2013
C Alex Toth, Sr., Marietta
Toth batted .625 (5-for-8) last week with four extra base hits
(two doubles, triple and home run). He scored five times and drove
in five runs. Toth has had only six base runners attempt to steal
on him all season.
1B Jason Cohen, Sr., DePauw
Cohen had at least two hits in five of the six games as he batted
.619 (13-for-21). Cohen hit two doubles, a triple and a home runs
as Cohen tallied a .952 slugging percentage. Cohen drove in 10 runs
with seven in the series finale against Wabash.
2B Brandon Chase, Sr., Saint Joseph's
(Me.)
For the week, Chase hit an even .500 (10-for-20) with six runs and
seven RBI with an outstanding 1.100 slugging percentage over six
games. In a pair of convincing victories over GNAC-rival Suffolk,
he went 7-for-8 with a program-record three triples in the opening
win.
SS Nick Ramagli, Sr., Kean
Ramagli's bat helped Kean to a 3-1 week as he drove in nine with
four extra base hits, three doubles and a triple. Ramagli had a
.765 slugging percentage with a .500 on base percentage. He also
didn't commit an error from his shortstop position with 24
chances.
3B Beau Langs, So., Olivet
From the leadoff position in the lineup, Langs batted 12-for-16
(.750) with six RBI and seven runs scored. In Olivet's first
doubleheader sweep of the season at home against Albion, he went
6-for-7. He also did commit an error at third base.
OF Matt Sheneman, Jr., Neumann
Sheneman batted .667 (12-for-18) on the week with two doubles, one
home run and nine RBI to help Neumann to 4-1 week. Sheneman, with
six walks, was on base 75% of the time, crossing home plate 11
times.
OF Brendan Toughey, Sr., Baldwin
Wallace
Toughey batted .562 (9-for-16), scored 10 runs and eight
runs batted-in. Toughey had six extra base hits, two doubles, two
triples, and two home runs for a 1.313 slugging average.
OF Tucker White, Sr., Southern Maine
White had multiple hits in all five games, batting .636
(14-for-22) on the week. White tied a school single game record for
doubles (3) in a game with Colby on Wednesday. White had four more
doubles, two triples and a home run in his remaining games for a
1.273 slugging percentage.
DH Ronald Echavarria, Sr., Purchase
Echavarria collected 11 hits in 17 at-bats (.647) with 11 RBI and
nine runs scored as Purchase went 4-0 in league play en route to a
perfect 5-0 week. Echavarria cracked three doubles, two home runs
and a triple for a 2.428 slugging percentage.
SP Ryan Jacobs, Sr., Penn St.-Behrend
Jacobs threw the first perfect game in Penn State Behrend history.
Against Mount Aloysius, a team that was hitting over .300, Jacobs
struck out six batters in seven innings. He commanded the strike
zone, throwing less than 70 pitches while going to a three-ball
count just twice.
SP Nate Jones, Sr., Illinois Col.
Jones pitched the first no-hitter of his career on Sunday,
allowing no hits and just one walk over nine innings in a 3-0 win
over Grinnell. He struck out 10 in the win. Jones' no-hitter is
Illinois College's first since 2010.
SP Oliver Van Zant, Sr., Bowdoin
Van Zant threw just the fifth no-hitter in the 146-year history of
Bowdoin baseball on Saturday against Colby. He allowed just two
base runners, both on clear errors, and struck out 11 batters,
walking none, in the victory. It was just the second nine-inning
no-hitter by a Bowdoin pitcher and the first since Leland Means in
1911.
RP Steven Kimmelman, Jr., Cortland St.
Kimmelman earned two wins in relief for the nationally ranked Red
Dragons. In a combined six innings of scoreless work, he allowed
only two hits and two walks and struck out nine batters. He gave up
one hit and one walk and fanned five batters in three and a third
innings in an 11-3 win at Rochester Wednesday and allowed one hit
and one walk and struck out four in two and two-thirds scoreless
innings in a 2-1 win over Misericordia Sunday.
