D3baseball.com Team of the Week

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its fourth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the second Team of the Week of the 2015 season.

Games of February 16-22, 2015

Jacob Mayfield, Sr., Birmingham Southern

Mayfield helped No. 18 Birmingham Southern move to 5-0, going 6-for-11 (.545) at the plate. He hit three doubles with four RBI for an .818 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage. Mayfield also scored six runs and was hit-by-pitch twice. At his post behind the plate, he made 24 putouts with two assists for a perfect fielding percentage.

1B  Justin Law, Jr., Texas Lutheran

Law led the team with eight hits over four games last week, batting .571 (8-for-14) with three extra-base hits. He had three RBI and led the team with four walks.

2B  Garrett Hughes, So., Whitworth

Hughes went 5-for-9 (.556) with seven RBI and six runs scored in three games played while helping Whitworth to a series sweep of Schreiner in Texas. He posted an slugging percentage of 1.222 during the weekend and scored two runs in each game he played. In game three of the series he was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and finished a double shy of the cycle.

SS  Nick Falkson, Fr., Brandeis

Falkson hit safely in all six Brandeis games in Florida, leading the Judges in batting average (.458), hits (11), extra-base hits (4) and slugging percentage (.708). He was second on the squad with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. He also made just one error in 31 chances, second-most chances on the team, while being involved in five double plays.

3B  Eric Lawson, Jr., Linfield

Lawson continued his hot start to the year, extending his hitting streak to six games with a 6-for-10 (.600) weekend series. He totaled three extra-base hits, all doubles, for a .900 slugging percentage. He drove in a team-high three runs and was defensively perfect at third base.

OF Jeff Gertley, Jr., Adrian

Gertley led the team with a .400 batting average (4-for-10) this weekend in Alabama. He scored four runs and belted two doubles and a home run with three RBI. He sported a .500 on-base percentage and .900 slugging percentage.

OF  Caleb Maddox, Fr., Concordia (Texas)

In his first collegiate at-bat, Maddox hit a grand slam to propel Concordia (Texas) to a 7-3 win at Ozarks this past Sunday. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Maddox stepped to the plate and hit a blast to left field that broke a 3-3 tie and led the Tornados to victory.

OF  Andrew Wallis, Sr. Rhodes

Wallis led the Lynx to a 3-0 weekend. The senior outfielder hit .600 on the week (6-for-10) with three doubles and a triple. Wallis’ slugging percentage on the week was 1.100 with an on base percentage of .667. The St. Louis, Mo. native added four RBIs on the weekend bringing his total to 10 for the season.

DH  Peter Newman, So., Wheaton (Ill.)

Newman went 2-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch, two runs scored and two stolen bases in a loss to Rhodes on Friday. He followed this with a 3-for-3 day with 3 RBIs and three runs scored in Wheaton's victory over Southwestern on Saturday. Newman finished the week at .700 (7-for-10).

SP  Seth Davis, Sr., Augustana

Davis pitched all nine innings in Augustana's season opener. In the shutout win, he allowed three single and two walks.

SP  Clayton Freimuth, Sr., Frostburg State

Freimuth tossed a seven-inning no-hitter on Saturday, the first no-hitter in D-III baseball this season. The left-hander struckout 14 batters and allowed just three walks in seven innings of work in Frostburg’s 3-0 victory over Guilford. Freimuth has made two appearances on the mound this season and has not allowed a run in eight innings.

SP  Mike Walker, Jr., Trinity (Texas)

Walker led Trinity (Texas) in finishing off a three-game series sweep against Dallas on Sunday afternoon, earning the victory in his first start of the 2015 season. Walker threw six shutout innings in a 12-0 victory for Trinity, allowing just two hits among 21 batters faced, and striking out six players without allowing a walk.

RP  Daniel Morris, Jr., Rhodes

Morris combined to pitch a four hit shutout vs. No. 3 Emory. Morris threw the final three innings allowing one hit while striking out three to pick up the save.
