McLain to head D'Youville Spartans

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville athletic department is proud to announce the hiring of Kyle McLain as head coach of the D'Youville baseball team, effective immediately.

McLain comes to the Spartans via a conference rival as he served as pitching coach for the Medaille Mavericks for the 2018 season. In just one season as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) school, McLain was pivotal in developing the team's pitching staff and assisting in the team reaching their most conference wins since 2011.

Under McLain's guidance, one Medaille pitcher developed into an all-conference pitcher. He lowered his ERA by nearly four full runs from 6.54 to 2.56, increased his strikeouts by 12, and lowered his opponent's batting average by nearly .070 points. As a whole, the pitching staff lowered their collective walk total from the previous season and two pitchers ranked in the top-12 of ERA.

At the collegiate level, McLain was an extremely impressive player at Washington and Jefferson. In four years with the Presidents, McLain earned three first team all-conference selections and two all-region selections. Kyle played third base and shortstop throughout his four-year career while also serving as the team's closer his junior and senior years. For his senior season, McLain went on to set the program's single season save record with 10, ranking third in the NCAA Division III. He also played in two NCAA tournaments.

In 2013, McLain played in the New York Collegiate Baseball League for the Olean Oilers and was an NYCBL All-Star, First Team All-NYCBL selection, and led the league in saves. Following his senior season, Kyle graduated from Washington and Jefferson in 2014 with his degree in Business Management. He then earned pre-draft tryouts for the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft with multiple teams such as the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs.

McLain now resides in Williamsville, NY and previously returned to his alma mater at Canisius High School as an assistant coach. When he attended Canisius High School from 2006-10, Kyle was a three-year letter winner, All-League selection, All-Western New York selection, All-New York State team selection, and a two-time Catholic League champion.

In the fall of 2018, the Spartans baseball team finished the season with an overall record of 4-24 and two all-conference players.
