Ryan Grubbs paced a potent offensive attack, while Josh Husby pieced together an incredible run on the mound as the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport stormed past Ferrum, 16-1, in the season opener on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Captains Park. Leading the lineup, Grubbs pounded out four hits and knocked in six runs, while four other Captains added multi-hit outings. Jordan Mason was especially productive at the top of the order with two hits and three RBI, while Nick DiNapoli scored three times. Overall, the squad's 16 runs marked the most by the Captains in a season opener since the 2013 squad also dropped 16 runs on Hampden-Sydney during a 16-5 triumph on February 4, 2013.
Nationally fourth-ranked Trinity (Texas) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat eighth-ranked Cortland, 9-8, in the season opener for both teams. Cortland scored twice in the first and twice in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Trinity responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, tied the game with two in the sixth, and grabbed a 7-4 lead with three in the bottom of the seventh. The Red Dragons answered with four runs in the top of the eighth only to have Trinity rally for the win in the ninth.
Landon Weatherly pitched six strong innings, and the No. 3 Texas Lutheran Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the young 2019 season with a 10-6 win over Hendrix at the Rusty Greer / Jackie Moore Classic at AirHogs Stadium. Weatherly, a junior right-hander, struck out six and allowed just one earned run. He walked two and scattered four hits. With TLU leading 10-1 in the seventh, Hendrix rallied for five runs (four unearned). Bulldog closer Dylan Murrell finished off the Warriors with two perfect innings of relief. He struck out three.
Birmingham-Southern earned a split in Saturday's doubleheader with LaGrange, moving to 1-2 overall early in the 2019 season. BSC fell to the Panthers from LaGrange 5-2 in the first game of the doubleheader. Birmingham-Southern picked up a 4-1 win in the final game of the day, picking up the game-winning runs in the sixth inning.
Ryan Kingma threw six strong innings and visiting Whitworth broke away in the ninth frame for a 7-1 non-conference baseball win at the College of Idaho. Ryan Kingma went six innings and allowed one run on five hits to earn the victory. Mathew Pulliam tossed the final three frames, allowing only one hit, to pick up the save. Nicholas Nerud finished the game 3-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. He was the only Pirate with more than one hit.
Sul Ross Lobo fended off a late-game comeback and defeated George Fox, 13-10 in the second day of the annual Cactus Classic in Tucson. Senior relieverLuis Payan collected the win after 1.2 innings. Payan gave up a run off a pair of hits and recorded a strikeout. Freshman closer Ian Craige bagged the save after a complete inning. Aaron Marquez started the game, lasting 4.1 innings before giving way to Payan.
Occidental opened its 2019 season with a pair of wins over Puget Sound at Anderson Field. Oxy had a lethal combination of outstanding pitching and hitting, beating the Loggers 20-3 over 18 innings played. Jack Brancheau went a perfect 5 for 5 on the day with a homer, a double, four runs scored and three RBIs. Puget Sound finally decided not to pitch to him after his blast over the wall in the first inning of Game 2, walking him his next four times at the plate. Jake Fredrickson was also a monster for the Tigers, going 4 for 8 on the day with two runs scored, six RBIs, a double and a home run. Nolan McCarthy and Diego Ramirez dealt in their first starts, and Bryce Coyne and Matthew Geiger were both very impressive in extended relief stints.

McMurry split its doubleheader with Schreiner at Walt Driggers Field, taking game one, 4-1, before falling, 3-0, in the nightcap. However, the War Hawks won the season-opening series, 2-1.Matthew Chalk went 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs in game one, adding a double in four trips to the platein game two.

Belhaven split a doubleheader, winning 7-6 over No. 24 Rhodes and falling 6-2 to Maryville. Justin Milam scored the winning run after a walk off single to center field in the bottom half of the eleventh inning to give Belhaven the 7-6 win over the Lynx. In the nightcap, Maryville scored three runs to push the Scots ahead, 3-1. Maryville extended its lead to 6-2 in the final three innings to close out the game.
Six runs in the middle innings was the deciding factor for Sewanee, as the Tigers downed the Mountaineers of Berea, 8-0, from Riverwalk Stadium on Day 2 of the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic. Carter Huffman finished the day with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a homer and a double and three RBI. Host Huntingdon defeated Guilford 8-0 and has not allowed a run in their first two game. Sewanee and Huntingdon face off on Sunday for the tournament title.
The Washington and Lee baseball team opened the 2019 season with a pair of wins, 11-2 and 7-3, at Averett. W&L is now 2-0 to start a season for the fourth time in the last five yearswhile Averett sits at 0-2 to begin its season. In all, nine different Generals had at least one hit between the two games, with six of those players tallying two or more. With nine at-bats on the day, Chadwick Feeley moved into a tie for fourth place on the program's career at-bats leaderboard (487).
Saturday was Opening Day at Twenty Field for the 2019 version of the Millsaps Majors. The Majors welcomed the Yellow Jackets of LeTourneau to Jackson. LeTourneau scored first, but it was Millsaps who dominated the middle innings in order to come away with the 8-4 win. William Warner finished the day with a team-high 4 hits, and he also scored 2 runs. Jimmy Fondren and Brennan Ducote each had 2 RBIs to go along with home runs.

Southern Virginia swept its doubleheader in their season-opener against Penn State Mont Alto, winning the first game 10-4 and the second 17-3. Bridger Taylor accounted for 14 of the Knights' runs with five runs scored and nine RBIs on a 5-for-8 day at the plate.
Behind a stellar start from Jered Davenport and timely hitting, Concordia Texas picked up a 10-1 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor at QuickTrip Field in game two of the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic. Davenport, a freshman out of Lorena, Texas, was phenomenal in his collegiate debut on the mound, giving up just three hits over 4.0 innings as CTX moved to 2-0 on the season. Offensively, the Tornados were led by Casen Novak who finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Along with Novak, Bret Leiferman, Carson Cox and Owen Hill all had multi-hit games as CTX racked up 11 hits on the day as a team.
Brevard split a Saturday doubleheader with William Peace at the USA Baseball National Training Facility in Cary, N.C. Freshman LHP Matthew Scavotto (1-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched five scoreless innings in game two of the doubleheader to earn BC a split with WPU. Brevard and William Peace play the finale of the four game season at 1 pm on Sunday.
University of Dallas game one of the series versus University of the Ozarks 8-6. The Crusaders had a six-run third inning as five-different UD players drove in runs. Dallas tacked on a run in the fourth and the fifth to take an 8-1 lead into the final inning. The Eagles rallied for a five-run bottom half of the seventh with two outs. Dallas escaped with the win after William Bresnahan shut the door. Dallas grabbed a 5-3 lead in Game 2 after a three-run fourth. The game was suspended after the eighth inning due to darkness. The game will resume on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in the Top of the 9th.
Casey Whitaker hit a walk-off single in game one, giving Berry a series-opening split against the Emory & Henry Wasps. The Vikings claimed game one 7-6 after falling behind by six runs. Berry then dropped game two 8-4 and now sit at 1-2 on the year. In the opener, the Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the seventh off a Casey Whitaker double, a ground out RBI from Quinn Smith and heads-up baserunning from Whitaker to score on a wild pitch. Whitaker then singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth to give the Vikings the walk-off victory. In game two, the Wasps tallied four runs in the second and three in the fourth to give them the winnin margin in a split for Emory and Henry on the day.
Hardin-Simmons' beat Linfield 12-9 in a wild game at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie. Hunter Garrison and Garrett Buckner had three hits each for HSU to pace the 14-hit attack. Hayden Clark was solid on the mound, scattering eight hits in six innings of work to earn the win. He allowed just one earned runs (three total). Justin Adams and Hayden Day worked in relief.
