Huntington make it 6-0 with wins over UW-Whitewater and Spadling in the final day of the Moe's BBQ Smokin' Classic. The Hawks opend the day with a 3-1 win over the Warhawks and followed with a 4-3 squeaker over Spalding. North Central lost for the third time to open the season. Al three loses were by double digit runs.
Third-ranked Texas Lutheran remained unbeaten in 2019 by completing a three-game series sweep of Hardin-Simmons with 7-4 and 7-1 wins. At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, TLU won the early game behind two RBI from Nick Gardoni and home runs from Tyler Cauley and Dalton Kinder. Kinder had three hits and scored three runs. Nathan Malinovsky tossed four innings of the seven-inning game to pick up his first win of the year. Malinovsky, a two-time All-American, allowed two earned runs, walked four and struck out three. Drew Waller tossed the last three innings to post the save. In game two, Austin Colon doubled twice, tripled, reached base four times, and drove in a pair of runs. Matthew Hickey picked up the win in relief. He struck out four and surrendered just one hit in 2-1/3 innings. Riley Backs started and went three innings. He allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked three.
Tyler Hopman tossed seven innings of two hit ball, allowing just one run, as Kean made it two in a row defeating Gwynedd Mercy by the final of 5-3. Nick Polizzano led all hitters with a 3-for-4 day with two doubles and a run scored.
Covenant completed its first three-game sweep of the season with two wins over Emory & Henry on Lookout Mountain. The Scots took game one, 7-1, before completing the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the finale. Covenant moves to 5-1 on the year, while Emory & Henry drops to 1-5. The Scots are 19-1 all-time against Emory & Henry. The Scots hit three home runs between the two games, including an inside-the-park homer from John Mitchell. CJ Edmond and Alex Gonzalez both homered in the game one victory.
For the second straight day, Fontbonne displayed quality pitching and timely hitting as the Griffins went on for the 3-1 win over No. 24 Rhodes. That score remained the same up until the ninth. Gus Purschke got things started with a one out single to right-center and advanced to second on an error. After a passed ball, a groundout, and a walk to Michael Puckett, Jr., the Griffins had runners on the corners for Braeden Dobbs. A wild pitch moved Puckett, Jr., up to second. Then, Dobbs came through with a single to right-center and that plated the duo to give Fontbonne a two-run lead. Mike Jacobson came on in relief and despite the Lynx bringing the tying run to the plate, the St. Louis, Mo., native, secured the save for the Griffins.
Jerick Nomura had two hits and an RBI, Milo Mincin tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the win and Whitman opened the NWC Round Robin with a thrilling 3-2 win in 12 innings over Lewis & Clark, at Roy Helser Field. Whitman lost their second game to host Linfield 6-5. An hour north, McMinnville Willamette spit their games, defeating Puget Sound 5-4 but losing to host Pacific 4-1. Pacific made it 2-0 in the Round Robin tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Puget Sound.
Centre split its opening day doubleheader against Berea, winning by an 8-2 score before falling in a 5-2 nightcap at Gary Wright Field. Centre starter Sam Shelley fanned the first three batters he faced in Saturday's opener and set a tone for game. Shelley earned the winning decision, while freshman Will Orren picked up a save after tossing four scoreless innings in relief. Berea starter Josh Wilson wound up tossing five scoreless innings, scattering four hits while striking out four. Game two belonged to Berea and starter Josh Wilson. Wilson wound up tossing five scoreless innings, scattering four hits while striking out four to earn the win.

Piedmont continued the magic by taking an 8-7 thriller in 10 innings over George Fox at Loudermilk Field. Down to its final strike with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Cameron Johnson erased an 8-7 deficit to force the game to extra innings. After a scoreless top of the 10th, Tyler Burdette legged out an infield single as Andrew Burden raced home from second base to keep the Lions (5-2) undefeated at home on the season. With two outs and no one aboard in the 10th, Burden's perfectly placed double just fell in for a hit, setting the table for Burdette to deliver PC's first walk-off win of the season.
Tom Butler and Nolan McCarthy were outstanding on the hill as Occidental improved to 4-0 with a 2-0 non-conference win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Anderson Field. Butler started and went seven scoreless innings, striking out four with just one walk and a hit coming against him. McCarthy, who was named the SCIAC Pitcher of the Week after striking out 11 batters in six scoreless innings for an opening-day win, pitched the final two innings, closing the door on the Stags with a pair of shutout innings for the save. He struck out three batters and didn't allow a hit or walk. McCarthy has now pitched eight scoreless innings this season, with 13 strikeouts and just two walks.
Trinity's fourth-ranked baseball team bounced back after its first loss of the season with a 5-0 shutout victory over Birmingham-Southern. Trinity did most of its damage early in the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after just two innings of action. James Nittoli pitched around multiple hits in each of the first two innings to set up the Tiger offense to take the lead, stranding two Birmingham base runners in each frame. After the Panthers left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Trinity was able to scratch across an insurance run on an infield single that made it a five-run lead.That was more than enough for Nittoli, who enjoyed the longest outing of his career, but fell two outs short of a complete-game shutout. After the fifth, Birmingham didn't get another runner in scoring position until there were two outs in the ninth and the game was out of reach.
Howard Payne hosted the War Hawks of McMurry in a doubleheader. The Jackets split with the War Hawks dropping game one 4-1 and dominating game two 9-4. After getting out to an early 1-0 lead when Cliff Lunceford scored on an error, a four run 6th inning put the game away for the War Hawks. McMurry jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two. The Jackets battled back for the rest of the game scoring two in the 4th on a Manny Torralba three bagger that scored Stephen Prewitt and Nolyn Box. The Jackets took a 6-4 lead in the 6th thanks to some while pitches, a walk and a sac fly from Kade Coleman. Howard Payne put the nail in the coffin with a three run 7th and took the series 2-1.

Neumann wrapped up its opening weekend with a 9-4 win over Bridgewater (Va.) in the Diamond Invitational. Freshman Will Hart toed the rubber in his first collegiate start. Hart went 3.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits, and struck out four in the no-decision. Jared Morris collected his first win of 2019 in relief putting out a masterful performance. The junior righty tossed 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and four strikeouts.
Hendrix opened up the 2019 season at home when Hendrix hosted Millikin for a pair of games from Warrior Field. Tied up 2-all late in the game, two runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning allowed for an 8-6 victory by Hendrix in the Warriors' first-ever victory over Big Blue in program history. In game two of the doubleheader, Evan Ingram tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball en route to his first victory of the season after Hendrix hung nine runs on Big Blow in a 9-0 shutout of Millikin for the series victory.
University of Dallas split its twin bill against LeTourneau. The Crusaders won Game One 3-2. Dallas led from the fourth inning on, but the Yellowjackets scored two runs in the top half of the seventh inning to knot things up. Josh Abalos was the hero as he hit a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. In Game 2 LeTourneau came back with a vengeance to win 9-2.
Lynchburg earned a season-opening split in a doubleheader, besting host Maryville (Tenn.) 2-0 in the opener before dropping a 9-1 decision in the nightcap. Junior right-hander Hunter Campbell and freshman right-hander Brandon Pond combined on the shutout in the season's first game, while freshman first baseman Garrett Jackson drove in both runs with a seventh-inning home run. It was Lynchburg's first shutout since March 5, 2016, when the Hornets took a 1-0 win over Bridgewater on the front end of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, left-hander Anthony Rodriguez held the Hornets to only four hits over five innings while the bullpen of Zach Messinger, Trevor Townsend, Nick McClendon, and Samuel Joiner allowed only one hit over the final four innings.
Berry secured its first series sweep of the season, claiming both games in a doubleheader, 4-2 and 10-2. The Vikings now sit at 6-2 on the year, having won five straight games. Berry only trailed in one inning as contributions came up and down the line up for the Vikings. Dalton Smith and JT Eggert earned wins.
