Hope hits twenty win mark on Tuesday

The comeback by Hope started with the usual contributors. Some new ones completed the rally and propelled the Flying Dutchmen to a unprecedented 20-1 start to their season. By design, 19 position players and four pitchers took the field during a 4-2 non-league victory at Cornerstone University on Tuesday.  Hope scored four answered runs after the Golden Eagles struck for two during the second inning. "I don't think we could have scripted it any better," head coach Stu Fritz said after the scheduled nine-inning game. "We talk about needing all 32 players. We played every single healthy position player today. Everyone who played contributed. We got solid pitching. We didn't make an error. "Give Cornerstone a lot of credit. I was impressed with the arms they put out there. It was a really good day for us."

Marietta and Mount Union split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Don Schaly Stadium. The Purple Raiders took game one, 8-7, and the Etta Express won game two, 5-1. Both teams are 4-4 in the OAC, while Marietta is 10-13 overall and Mount Union is 16-8 on the season. Mount Union scored two runs in the ninth inning to come from behind to win game one. Mount Union scored an unearned in the fifth inning to spoil the game two shutout and the Pioneers picked up an unearned run in the sixth for the 5-1 final score.

Muhlenberg scored three runs in the ninth and one in the 11th to come from behind and defeat Swarthmore, 9-8. It was the first time since 2013 that the Mules won a game in which they entered the ninth inning trailing by at least three runs, and it came against one of the best teams in the country. No. 9 Swarthmore is the defending Centennial Conference champion and has been ranked in the top 10 in Division III all season. Muhlenberg (13-12, 3-4) completed its stretch of four CC games in three days with a 3-1 record, tying the game in the ninth and winning in extras twice. Junior Jack Avallone drove in the winning run in the top of the 11th with a single, the last of the Mules' 18 hits. Senior Chris Grillo went 4-for-6, including two doubles, and scored the winning run, while senior Matt Riebesell and Avallone had three hits apiece.

Behind a stellar pitching performance from freshman starter Dylan Fashempour, Mass-Boston earned their biggest win of the 2019 season as they defeated Little East Conference rival and third-ranked Huskies of the University of Southern Maine by the final of 7-3 at Monan Park. Facing his first nationally-ranked opponent, Fashempour was impressive throughout his six innings of work as he picked-up his second win of 2019. The righty from California allowed just three hits and did not surrender a run. He also struck out six and walked just three batters. Kyle Boudrias ended the contest with a 3-for-4 day at the plate which included the RBI and the run scored.

First baseman Matthew Lange delivered a two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning lifting Drew to a 7-5 victory over Montclair State at Yogi Berra Stadium. Cole Bosch added a pair of RBI as the Rangers captured their fifth straight and improved to 15-10 on the year. Drew also picked up its first win against MSU as the teams met for the first time since 1983. Junior second baseman Joe Norton had two hits and two RBI for the Red Hawks (10-14), who suffered another late-inning loss this one coming less than 24 hours falling to DeSales University in 16 innings, 8-7.

Ithaca defeated the No. 25 SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, 15-2, at Freeman Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Ithaca's overall record is 16-5, while Cortland falls to 18-9-1. This is the first time Ithaca has defeated the Red Dragons since 2013 as the Bombers dropped Cortland three times that season en route to a third place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. Entering the game, Cortland was on an 11-game winning streak and had only given up 17 runs during that span.

Oberlin earned its sixth consecutive doubleheader split at Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, winning game one 9-6 before dropping game two 8-7 in gut-wrenching fashion. The Yeomen pounded out hits 20 hits on the day, led by Brendan Mapes' 5-for-9 showing that included two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Nick Nelson, Parker Goldstein, Jack Marsjanik and Lawrence Hamilton each had three hits over the two games.

Three different pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter and DeSales hit six home runs leading the Bulldogs past Scranton, 17-0, in non-conference action at Weiland Park. Freshman Johnathan Pozniak earned the win carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a hit on the first batter of the sixth inning, the lone hit of the game for the Royals. Pozniak earned his first collegiate win and struck out four. Freshman JJ Paul pitched two scoreless innings striking out four and freshman Zac Vittorelli tossed a scoreless ninth. The Bulldogs offense built an early cushion scoring five times in the first, three times in the second, and six times in the third. Senior Aaron Fritz hit two home runs, scored three times, and drove in four runs. Junior Sergion Diaz was 3-for-3 witha grand slam, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Ripon led from start to finish Tuesday afternoon to defeat
St. Norbert 11-4 in what was the second half of last week's
doubleheader, which was postponed due to darkness. That
win splits the season series with the Green Knights with
each team winning both games on their home turf.

Johns Hopkins found itself trailing 6-2 in the top of the fourth and went on to outscore McDaniel 14-3 in the remaining innings to defeat the Green Terror 16-9 on Tuesday afternoon as Hopkins has moved into a first-place tie with Dickinson in the Centennial Conference with a 5-2 league record. The Blue Jays are now 91-61 all-time against McDaniel and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams. JHU has now scored more than seven runs in eight of the last nine games and has tallied at least 10 hits in nine consecutive games.

Otterbein took care of business in a home conference doubleheader at Fishbaugh Field, sweeping Wilmington by scores of 11-2 and 10-8 on a perfect sunny day. The Cardinals, improving to 6-2 within the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule, received another strong pitching effort from freshman Travis Engard in the opener before scoring 10 early runs in the rematch and holding on.

SUNY Oneonta clawed their way to an 8-4 win over Kean in non-conference action. Mickey Mullins paced Oneonta by going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a pair of walks. Dominic Lamonica, Jonathan Lezette and Mike Graves drove in two runs apiece while Brandon LaVenture went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Michael Dunne earned the win after allowing two runs on two hits in four innings of relief. Nick Fini earned his first collegiate save after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Fini got himself out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth as the Red Dragons clung to a 5-4 lead.

Alex Burman, Ben Burman and Peter Yarem all had big days at the plate while Sean Rodriguez impressed with a quality start that included nine strikeouts and Susquehanna escaped a few rough innings to defeat Messiah 13-6 in ten innings. The River Hawks scored seven runs in the top of the tenth inning to run away with an important game heading into a conference matchup with Scranton Wednesday.

Scoring 11 runs in the final two innings of play, LeTourneau would double up Austin by a score of 16-8 at Baker Field in their 2019 non-conference finale on Tuesday. LETU improves to 18-13 overall while the Kangaroos fall to 7-18 overall on the season. Of the 24 runs scored in the game, 21 runs would be scored in the final four innings of action as the first three innings of the game would go scoreless. Only two runners would make it to third through the first three innings as AC would manage to break through for the first run of the game with a bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the fourth before leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.

Senior SS Ben Reinisch singled home junior OF Matt Koperniak for the game-winning run with none out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-2 win over the visiting Williams College Ephs in baseball action in a steady rain this afternoon at Murren Family Field in DiBenedetto Stadium. Trinity improves to 16-4, its best start after 20 games since 2012 and will visit Nichols tomorrow.

Manhattanville dominated the Maritime Privateers at the plate and on the mound, posting a 17-hit attack while holding the Privateers to just four hits in a 16-0 win. The 16-run margin was the largest shutout win for the Valiants since a 12-0 win over the St. Joseph's College (Long Island) Golden Eagles back on April 1, 2005. Junior Peter Iannarilli slugged two home runs for Manhattanville (13-10) and classmate Joseph Silvestri crushed his first career homer as well; Silvestri reached base four times, including being hit by a pitch twice. Going back to their 33-8 win over Wilkes on Sunday, the Valiants have scored at least one run in 15 of the last 18 innings, and at least three runs in nine of those innings.

Lancaster Bible won for the fourth time in five games on Tuesday, defeating cross-county foe Elizabethtown, 6-5 in 10 innings. The Chargers are now 7-10 overall this season, while the Blue Jays dropped to 7-19. Lancaster Bible loaded the bases in the 10th inning after the Blue Jays made an error of their own, and Josh Saufley hit an RBI groundout and the Chargers regained the lead. Dan Zimmerman struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning, and Lancaster Bible had its first true road win of the year.

Millsaps hit the road on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at Huntingdon The Hawks entered the matchup as the No. 21 team in the most recent D3Baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25. The Majors offense came alive as they combined for 22 hits on the afternoon en route to a pair of wins. Millsaps won game one 4-1, and used an eight-run top of the 6th in the nightcap to complete the sweep with an 11-9 game two win. With the two wins the Millsaps record improves to 8-25 overall on the year. Huntingdon falls to 22-11.

Senior left-handed pitcher Anthony Zicaro fired a career-high eight strikeouts and did not allow an earned run over 8.2 innings as New Jersey City upended FDU-Florham, 4-1, in a non-conference game at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. NJCU scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and seventh inning and four of its seven hits went for extra bases. The Gothic Knights improved to 12-8 on the season. FDU-Florham dropped to 10-16. The Gothic Knights are 6-2 against FDU in head coach Jerry Smith's eight seasons as head coach. The game was the first of six games in a five-day stretch for NJCU. Zicaro improved to 2-0, striking out eight and walking three while allowing one unearned run in the sixth inning and only six hits. Freshman closer John Pudder recorded the final out in the ninth inning with the tying run at the plate to record his fourth save.
