Chicago sweeps to stay atop Midwest standings

Dominating performances in all aspects earned Chicago two convincing wins Monday, as the Maroons downed visiting Lawrence in two shortened, seven-inning contests Monday. Kyle Petri (pictured) and Joe Liberman earned wins for the Maroons, while junior Payton Jancsy went 6-for-9 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI to lead a blistering offense that swung for 27 hits.

Something about playing nationally ranked opponents seems to agree with Ursinus. The Bears squandered a three-run lead in the ninth inning but bounced back to score twice in the 11th and hung on for a 7-5 victory at No. 7 TCNJ, improving to 3-0 against teams in the top-25 of Division III this season. Junior Alex Mumme broke the school record for RBI in a season (43) with a solo home run – his 12th of the season – in the first inning for Ursinus (18-14), which got the last week of the regular season off to a flying start with another signature victory to pair with a sweep of then-No. 11 Johns Hopkins earlier this month. Mumme has already established new standards for home runs and runs in a single campaign.

The Saint Joseph's College Monks played eight shutouts innings to pin a 3-0 setback on Bowdoin on a rainy Monday afternoon. The Monks combined for 12 hits. Greg Emanuelson and Ben Gravel both went 3-for-4 at the plate. Murphy, McDaniel, and Anthony DiPrizio were all 2-for-4. Three pitchers took the mound for the Monks, each allowed one hit. Gratson Jennings pitched five innings and had eight strikeouts. Weston Bergeron had one strikeout in one inning of work. George Welch pitched two innings and fanned three for St. Joseph's.

Keystone both games against Cairn in a CSAC doubleheader, taking game one 8-5 before winning game two, 2-0. With the sweep, the Giants are now 15-11 (8-1 CSAC) and will host Misericordia in a non-conference game in the middle of the week. Seniors Dakota McFadden and Johann Paniagua both homered and McFadden earned the win in game one. McFadden earned his third win of the spring by going 5 2/3 innings, throwing 101 pitches while striking out seven. Senior Wandy Brito tossed 1/3 while junior Zabdiel Parilla earned his first win of the year, fanning two in the seventh. Sophomore Nathan Hinkley tossed the complete game shutout with eight strikeouts as the Giants completed the sweep. The righty went the distance, allowing just six hits while walking one on 101 pitches.  Hinkley forced nine flyouts and four groundouts.

Southern Vermont picked up a pair of one-run New England Collegiate Conference wins over Elms as the Mountaineers defeated the visitors 4-3 and then 2-1 at Bill Epstein Field. SVC erased slim deficits in each game against a Blazer squad which entered the twin bill sitting at second place in the league standings. Southern Vermont (11-14-1, 5-7 NECC) is right back at The Bill on Tuesday for a non-conference contest against Williams.

Bates broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the fifth inning and never looked back on its way to a 16-3 win over Thomas at Leahey Field. The Bobcats (13-12) added three runs in the sixth and eight runs in the eighth inning on their way to a season-high in runs scored. The Terriers (8-17) briefly cut the Bates lead to 5-3 with three runs in the top of the sixth but the Bobcats blanked them the rest of the way.  Senior Justin Foley went five plus innings to pick up the win for Bates. Foley (4-2) retired 13 batters in a row at one point before the Terriers finally got on the board in the sixth. He ended up allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five on the afternoon.

Ohio Northern opened a busy, nine-game week Monday afternoon with an impressive 6-4 and 7-1 sweep over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Marietta at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta. The contests were originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather. With the victories, the Polar Bears improve to 17-14 overall in the 2019 campaign. More importantly, ONU surpasses Marietta in the conference standings, placing the team one game back from the fourth and final playoff spot.  Ohio Northern has now won seven of its last eight contests dating back to April 11. With the losses, Marietta falls to 14-17 overall and 7-7 in league action.

The Falcons had a pair of walk-off victories over the Warriors on Monday as Concordia Wisconsin defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 1-0 in game one and 12-11 in game two. -n the opening game of the day, the Falcons held the Warriors to one hit through ten innings. Lukas Meerdink allowed just the one hit through nine innings pitched as he walked only two while striking out nine. Charlie Rodriguez entered the game in the tenth as a pinch hitter and proceeded to win the game for the Falcons with an RBI single to second base. Game two featured big innings but with runners on the corners and two outs n the ninth, Jared Chesak hit a tough grounder that the Warrior third baseman couldn't handle, letting Drew Barth score the game-winner.

Hope saw its 16-game winning streak come to an end Monday afternoon as the Flying Dutchmen dropped both halves of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Alma, 9-7 and 11-9. The two losses dropped Hope out of first place in the MIAA, as Adrian College swept a doubleheader from Albion on Monday to move into the top spot in the conference. The Flying Dutchmen are now 15-3 in conference play and 25-3 overall heading into a MIAA doubleheader Tuesday at Trine.

Aurora split a NACC doubleheader with Benedictine in a wild windy pair of games that saw AU fall 17-4 in game one and win game two 8-6. Aurora fell behind 16-0 after 3-1/2 innings with numerous plays seeing the wind cause issues including an inside the park grand slam. The Spartans fell behind 1-0 in the first with the second inside park home run of the day but scored five in the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead. Benedictine took the lead back  in the sixth but the Spartans had an answer as both could not put togerther a rally in the last third of the game.

Gwynedd Mercy picked up two big Atlantic East Conference wins, sweeping visiting Marymount in a doubleheader on Monday. The Griffins scored three times in the fifth to rally for a 3-2 win in game one while game two saw Gwynedd ride the arm of Nick DeRitis as the senior tossed a three-hit shutout in a 12-0 victory. The wins move the Griffins into second place past the Saints in the Atlantic East standings. The team will close out conference play on Saturday at Neumann with a chance to lock up the #2 playoff seed.
