EAST BOSTON, Mass. – Worth Walrod was near perfect on the mound as he fired a no-hitter in the opener of Sunday's GNAC baseball doubleheader against Anna Maria to lead Suffolk baseball to a 5-0 victory over the AMCATs at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Anna Maria 0
RECORDS: Suffolk (16-9-1, 9-0 GNAC) | Anna Maria (8-19, 1-8 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Walrod allowed just one base runner on a walk over the first three innings before Suffolk started the scoring in the bottom of the third. A ground-rule double down the left field line by Blase Cormier brought in Rich Gilbride, who reached on a single through the left side and stole second, to get into scoring position, to give the Rams' a one-run lead.

Anna Maria threatened in the fourth with a lead-off hit-by-pitch. The base runner advanced on a fielder's choice and reached third on a passed ball. The Rams defense backed up Walrod to keep the AMCAT stranded and keep the 1-0 game in their favor.

Suffolk stretched its edge to three in the home half of the inning. Tim Brigham led off with a ground-rule double, moved to third on Rich Giandrea's perfectly placed bunt down the third base line and scored courtesy of Shane Lake's single to right center. Giandrea came in next on Connor Troio's sac fly to make it a 3-0 Suffolk game.

Walrod struck out the side in the fifth and retired the order in the sixth to keep the AMCATs off the scoreboard. The Rams, meanwhile, tacked on one run in each inning to grab a 5-0 advantage. In the fifth, Will Hopkins picked up one RBI on a single to right that plated Trevor Lee, who singled and reached scoring position on a stolen base. In the sixth, a sac fly Giblride brought in Lake, who wore a pitch for the five-run margin.

After fanning Nick Genatossio swinging, Cormier preserved Walrod's no-no with a highlight-reel catch at first on Jackson Dobek's at bat for the second out of the inning. The senior southpaw sat down the final out with punchout, one of his 10 in the 7.0 innings of work needing 11 pitches for the complete-game effort.

  • In his no-hit performance, Walrod gave up just three walks and fanned 10 hitters.
