Warhawks avoid upset, Pacers win marathon on Saturday

got the win in his season debut, allowing two runs – on
seven hits and striking out seven batters. Trinity also

No. 17 ranked UW-Whitewater baseball team posted a 2-0 record Saturday on its first day at Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky.  The Warhawks (2-0 overall) opened the 2020 campaign with an 11-0 triumph over Spalding, and capped the day with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Anderson. Trailing 4-2 heading to the ninth inning against Anderson (0-1), UW-Whitewater surged ahead with five runs in the top half of the frame, including three to take the lead on a one-out, bases-loaded triple by senior centerfielder noah Jensen.

William Peace battled through 17 innings for a well-deserved (5-3) win over Hampden-Sydney. Logan Barbour was 2 for 6 with his triple at the top of the 17th recording 2 RBIs. Barbour also pitched for 6.1 innings, adding 6 strikeouts while allowing just 3 hits and no runs. Sam Peddycord was on the mound for the Pacers for 6 innings, tallying 2 strikeouts, while Phillip Berger pitched 4.2 innings as he notched 4 strikeouts.

Senior Zach Evans launched a three-run homer in the second to start the scoring, and senior right-hander Michael Zubovich fanned seven in seven solid innings, as Randolph-Macon downed fourth-ranked No 7 Cortland 8-4. Cortland defeated Pitt-Bradford 18-3 earlier in the day.

No. 13 Salisbury opened its season, defeating Gwynedd Mercy at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, 19-1. Salisbury starting pitcher Clayton Dwyer (1-0) picked up his first victory of the year, pitching 5 1/3 strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits, and striking out five batters. Cameron Hyder led the team with three RBI, going 3-for-4 at the plate, drawing a walk and scoring one run. Hyder also swiped a team-leading three bases. Brady O'Neil matched with three RBI of his own while adding a walk and two runs. Justin Meekins went 2-for-3, adding two RBI, two walks, two runs, and a stolen base.

Sewanee took care of Carroll in a doubleheader, securing the three-game series with a doubleheader sweep, 9-4 and 11-3, from Montgomery Field. The Tigers offense came out strong in the opening game of the twinbill and continued to add runs in the nightcap. Sully McCreery led Sewanee with four hits on the day.

In the first game of the day, Roanoke collected 16 hits on
its way to a 14-2 win over Piedmont then rallied for a
pair of runs in the ninth inning to upend host and
twenty-fifth ranked Christopher Newport 5-4 in the
second game of the day.

The 22nd ranked Texas Lutheran Bulldogs completed a three-game, non-conference series sweep of the Hardin-Simmons with victories of 16-3 and 6-5 at HSU's Hunter Field. TLU improved to 4-2 overall. HSU dropped to 0-6. Bulldog third baseman Alex Cornman, a junior from Georgetown, powered the Bulldogs' offense in the doubleheader. He went a combined 6-for-9 with six RBI, four runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Cornman went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in the first game Saturday. He had a double and a triple in that contest. In the second game, Cornman went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He hit a solo home run in the ninth that gave TLU a 6-4 cushion. With HSU scoring a run in the ninth, Cornman's homer proved to be the winning run.

The Lynx of Rhodes rallied behind their offense as they took on the Greenville Panthers. Rhodes tallied 17 hits in the ballgame as they cruised their way to a 12-6 victory. A total of 25 base hits were recorded in the ballgame. Rhodes finished with 17 and Greenville tallied eight. Nine different Lynx had a base knock. Seven of those nine recorded a multi hit game.

Bridgewater (Va.) opened the 2020 season in impressive fashion with wins over DeSales and Arcadia at the Diamond Invitational hosted by Methodist University. The Eagles defeated DeSales 6-1 in the first game of the day. In the opener, Tucker Garrison and Hunter Clever combined to limit DeSales to five hits and no earned runs in a 6-1 victory. In their second game, Bridgewater scored in each of the first five innings against Arcadia to jump out to a 6-1 lead and hold onfor a 8-5 win.

Covenant secured the series victory but split the doubleheader with Emory & Henry from Lookout Mountain. The Scots took game one 7-4 to take the series but was defeated 13-4 in the finale for Emory & Henry's first win of the season.

Fontbonne split their doubleheader to end a three game series with Belhaven for their first win of the season Fontbonne won the opener 7-4 and dropped the nightcap 11-1. On the mound Senior Ryan Howell pitched 6 innings while allowing two earned runs out of four in the opener to earn the Griffins' first win of the season.

University of Dallas swept its doubleheader versus Howard Payne. The Crusaders won the first game 7-2 after notching 10 hits and six stolen bases. Nathan Patton had three hits off of two doubles and two runs scored in the first game to lead the Crusaders. In Game two won 11-4 with 13 hits. Five different Crusaders had two hits each. Joseph Vondrachek led the Dallas attack with three RBI. Dallas combined for 18 run and 23 hits in the offensive outburst on the road.

Centre kicked off its 2020 season with a doubleheader against Principia at chilly Gary Wright Field. The Colonels pulled off the sweep with scores of 13-0 and 9-1 across the two games. Chris Esselman drove in seven runs in the doubleheader and got the win in the second game, striking out five batters in five innings while allowing just two hits and one run. Carson Werrmann shattered his career high with 13 strikeouts through six innings. All told, Centre pitchers struck out 22 Principia batters in the doubleheader.

Head Coach Mike Victory earned his first-career collegiate head coaching victory in an extra-inning classic, as Brevard (1-4) split a doubleheader to Guilford (2-2) in Greensboro, North Carolina.  The Tornados rallied from one-run down in the top of the seventh inning, tying the contest before scratching across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. Brevard shut the door in the bottom half of the extra frame to seal Coach Victory's first W at the helm of the Brevard Baseball program. Brevard fell in the front end of the doubleheader in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3, as the Quakers completed the comeback and sunk the Tornados.

Washington and Lee opened the 2020 season with 4-2 and 8-0 wins in a road doubleheader at Averett. The Generals open the season at 2-0 overall, while the two losses for the Cougars drop them to 0-3 in the early going. Jackson Gazin highlighted the offense with five hits between the two games, including three in game one, and he added three stolen bases and two runs on the day. Luke Czepiel and Chapin Bassi both went 3-for-5 with two RBI in game two.

Alfred State played solid in all facets of the game as they opened up the season with a sweep of Wesley. They defeated the Wolverines 7-0 in the opener and 10-3 in the nightcap. Andrew Santobuono struck out eight in the opener and allowed just three hits in six shutout innings. Matteo Avallone earned the win on the mound with four solid innings. He allowed one run on five singles. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Jarrod Deaton came out of the bullpen with two runners on and two outs in the 5th and retired seven straight Wolverines.

The Maryville diamondmen earned their fourth straight victory with a 7-5 doubleheader sweep of MacMurray on MC's Scotland Yard. Senior right-hander Zach Messinger advanced to 2-0 on the season after scattering five hits over seven innings. Messinger struck out five Highlanders without giving up and earned run. D.J. Cooper pitched out of trouble in the eighth allowing only one hit before Anthony Rodriguez earned his first save of the season with a hitless ninth.

Southern Virginia concluded its weekend with a series split on the road against Eastern Mennonite with the Knights winning game one 4-1 and then falling 4-0 in game two at EMU Baseball Field. Soto starred for the Knights on the mound in their opening day win, tossing six scoreless innings allowing just two hits while walking four and added seven punch outs. Freshman Curtis Drake picks up the save throwing one inning, allowing two hits, one run, and collecting one strikeout. The Royals won the second game thanks to a shutout effort on the mound by John Judy with six strong innings while allowing just one hit and striking out nine.

Ben Coker tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, fanning a career-high nine batters on Saturday afternoon, helping the Vikings to a doubleheader split to close out the Rawlings Southern Classic. Coker earned the win in game one as the Vikings topped Greenville 6-1. Berry dropped the second game to Greensboro 6-0. The Vikings now sit at 4-2 overall heading into Tuesday's matchup with Emory.  Coker's strong outing gave the Berry bats an opportunity against the Panthers. Berry jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings thanks to a pair of passed balls and RBI singles from Jon Hemings, Justin Carr and Dalton Smith. Greenville's Joe Wood broke up the shutout in the seventh inning with an RBI double. Berry's bats were held in check in game two, thanks to a 9.0 inning shutout from Greensboro's Parker Strader. Berry only tallied four hits as Spence Johns took his first tough-luck loss on the hill, tossing 5.0 innings allowing just one earned run and striking out six.
