Monmouth sweeps to Midwest title

More news about: Monmouth

On the same day the Monmouth College men's team completed a sweep of the indoor and outdoor conference championships, the Scots baseball team claimed their first Midwest Conference crown and the NCAA berth that goes with it since 2002 after defeating St. Norbert 10-3 Saturday afternoon at Glasgow Field to win the title with a 3-0 record.

Monmouth banged out 15 hits and used a pair of three-run innings to complete Monmouth's sweep of the major men's conference titles during the 2017-18 academic year, winning the football, basketball, baseball and both track titles. It marks the first time in school history Monmouth has won all the majors.

Connor McDonald worked seven-plus innings, scattering eight hits before leaving with a 6-2 lead. Grant Myers legged a leadoff triple in the fourth – tying coach Alan Betourne's Scots career triples record with his 11th – just an inning before Christian Lett began Monmouth's three-run fifth with a leadoff hit as the Scots batted around. A bases loaded walk to Harry Sanchez was followed by a Mike Dato RBI hit to open a 5-2 lead. Dato followed with a two-run homer to left in Monmouth's three-run eighth. Alex Sheetz came from the bullpen in the eighth, working out of a bases loaded, no-out jam, surrendering just one run while fanning two. Jake Starkey then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth before retiring the final three batters to send Monmouth to the NCAA Regionals after winning the MWC Championships.

St. Norbert took the day's play-in game with a 4-0 blanking of Grinnell. The Knights got out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the first and scored a pair of runs in the third after drawing three walks in the inning.

Monmouth will learn their destination and first round opponent in the NCAA Tournament Sunday night before midnight when the pairings are announced on NCAA.com. The Regionals run May 17-21.
