CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College baseball team earned a three-game sweep of East Texas Baptist with a 6-2 win in the first game at Woods Field on Saturday afternoon. The Choctaws (15-11) took the second game by a score of 11-6.
The Choctaws have now won six straight games and are sitting in fourth place in the ASC East DIvision.
In the first game, the Choctaws grabbed a lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Shane Bennett that scored Mike Kerdock.
Junior Spencer Brunson hit his third home run of the weekend with a solo shot in the third inning to put MC ahead, 2-0. On the weekend, Brunson hit .583 with four long balls and six RBI.
Senior Jacob Daniel singled home Brandon Benton in the fourth inning to give MC a 3-0 lead. Daniel went 2-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
The Tigers finally broke through against MC starter Ryan Glover with a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to cut the advantage to 3-2. Glover struck out six over 4.2 innings for the win.
MC put the game away in the sixth inning with three runs on an error and a bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch.
Senior Bubba Davis allowed just one hit and struck out three over 2.1 innings to collect the save.
Kerdock joined Daniel as the only Choctaws with multiple hits, while Brunson led the way with two RBI.
In the second game, the Choctaws jumped out in the first inning with two runs on RBI singles by Bennett and Benton. The two combined to go 7-9 with six runs scored and six runs batted in.
After ETBU scored a run in the second inning, Brunson answered with his fourth home run of the weekend, all solo shots, to give MC a 3-1 advantage.
Benton broke the game open in the fifth inning as his two-run single was part of a four-run frame to give MC a 7-1 lead.
ETBU scored another run in the sixth, but MC answered with RBI from Kerdock and Taylor Cloyd.
The Tigers got a two-run home run in the seventh inning, but Bennett and Benton hit back-to-back long balls to extend the lead to 11-4.
Junior Bo Craig (3-0) struck out six over 7.0 innings to tally the win. Terrell Prescott and Brett Bridges combined to finish the game and secure the win for MC.
The Choctaws will be back in action at Frierson Field when they host Belhaven at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
