Two-Run Eighth Pushes Choctaws Past Tougaloo, 5-3

CLINTON, MS - Sophomore Kyle Ladner and senior Andy Smith each had RBI singles in the eighth inning to give the Choctaws a 5-3 victory over Tougaloo on Tuesday night at Frierson Field.

The Choctaws opened the scoring in the third inning when sophomore Taylor Cloyd hit his fifth home run of the season just over the left field fence.

Senior Stuart Magee followed the shot with his second and the team's third inside-the-park home run of the season.

MC would add another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Shane Bennett that scored junior Mike Kerdock.

Tougaloo got on the board in the sixth on an RBI single by Myron Gilmore and an error by the Choctaws that allowed an unearned run.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single from Jared Downs that scored Derrick Singleton.

The Choctaws finally broke through and took the lead for good with the two-out, run-scoring singles from Ladner and Smith in the eighth inning.

Choctaw starter Stephen Byrd struck out three and allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings as he picked up the no-decision.

Senior Terrell Prescott tallied seven strikeouts over three innings, including strking out the side in the ninth to collect his first win of the season.

Tougaloo starter John Alford struck out six and allowed five earned runs over the complete game effort in the loss.

The Choctaws will move on to an important conference series this weekend as they travel to face Texas-Tyler beginning Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
