Montclair, NJ – Junior catcher Scott Glozzy (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) singled home two runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth innings that turned out to be the difference as Montclair State completed a home-and-home sweep of No. 24 Ramapo College with a 2-1 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Junior righthander Jake Campbell (Sayreville, NJ, Sayreville) pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory as the Red Hawks (14-7) stretched their winning streak to eight games as they remained unbeaten in NJAC play at 4-0.
Senior first baseman Dan Moreno (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) had two hits and drove a run for the Roadrunners (14-6, 1-3 NJAC), which dropped their third straight game.
Ramapo starter Travis Zilg (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) kept Montclair State off the scoreboard for the first five innings as he worked his way around five hits along with some solid defensive help and some timely pitches. However Zilg ran into trouble again in the sixth and this time couldn't escape the jam as MSU took the lead.
Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ, Cedar Grove) singled with one out and Stephen Nappe (Edison, NJ, Edison) was hit by a pitch putting runners at firt and second. Zilg would get a ground out for the second out and faced Glozzy, who bounced a ball back that eluded a diving second baseman Anthony Vinci (Trumbull, CT / St/ Joseph) as both runners scored giving the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead.
That hit would hold up as Campbell retired eight of the final nine batters for the victory. Campbell improved to 2-1 on the year as he fanned three hitters. Zilg allowed six hits, struck out five and walked two in the hard-luck loss, his first of the year (3-1). Junior lefty Travis Della Volpe (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Hills) started for MSU and pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up a run and six hits with three walks.
Each team would get chances early on. Vinci and Dave Jacob (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) singled with one out in the first before a double-play grounder ended the Ramapo threat. Montclair State would get the same in its half however Zilg induced an inning-ending ground out.
Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Jacob led off with a single in the infield and stole second. Moreno then ripped a base hit to left field scoring Jacob with the game's first run.
In the bottom half, Nappe led off with a lined shot toward the left-center wall the Jacob made a beautiful over-the-shoulder grab for the first out. After getting out of the inning, the Roadrunners threatened to add to the lead in the top of the fifth putting two runners on with one out. Della Volpe got a pop up in the field for the second out and after a hit batter, got a fly ball to left field for the final out as the game remained 1-0.
In the top of the sixth, Moreno walked and was sacrificed to second. A fielding error put runner on the corners for Ramapo when Campbell was summoned from the bullpen. Campbell would get a big strikeout on the first hitter he faced and then got a grounder to end the inning as MSU kept the deficit at a run.
Jacob had two hits for the Roadrunners, who outhit MSU in the game, 7-6. Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) and Bond had two hits apiece for Montclair State.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 7 with home NJAC doubleheaders beginning at 11:30 am. Montclair State faces No. 6 Kean at Yogi Berra Stadium while the Roadrunners are at Jeff Maund Field in Mahwah against ninth-ranked Rowan University.
