STEVENSON, Md. – Damien Hudson went 2-for 3 and Victor Vargas hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the third inning of the first game and Michael Smith went 2-for-3 from the dish in the second contest but the City College of New York (0-3) dropped both contests to Stevenson University (5-1), 7-3 and 7-1, respectively, on Saturday afternoon at Park Field.
For Hudson, it was his first career multi-hit game and Vargas picked up two RBI for the first time as a Beaver.
The Mustangs improved to 5-1 on the year and ride a five-game win streak since an opening day loss while CCNY fell to 0-3.
Game One
The Mustangs exploded for 11 hits as four players recorded multi-hit games, giving Stevenson a 7-3 victory in the first of two games. Right-hander Joe Walinski (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after tossing a five strikeout, three-run complete game (first quality start of the season) while Andrew Mulvey (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs in 5.2 innings.
After scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, Stevenson ran into trouble as Yoribaldis Olivo singled and advanced to second on an error and Kennedy Tavarez walked to begin the third frame. A bunt single by Hudson loaded the bases with no outs for the three-hole hitter, Alex Sasloff. After one out was recorded, a wild pitch allowed Olivo to score and Tavarez and Sasloff – who reached first base on a fielder's choice – to advance into scoring position with Vargas up at the plate and the game tied at 1-1. Vargas ripped a two-run single to right field to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead as Tavarez and Sasloff came around to score.
However, the lead could not hold up as the Mustangs added one run in the bottom frame before tying the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the sixth, Stevenson put up a four-spot to take a 7-3 lead heading into the final inning. Walinski shut the door and earned his first win of the season.
Game Two
Smith recorded his second multi-hit game of the 2013 campaign, going 2-for-3 at the dish with his second double of the series and Tavarez went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a double in the nonconference contest but the Mustangs pitching staff stifled the Beavers and held CCNY to just five hits as Stevenson defeated City College, 7-1, in the latter game of the doubleheader.
Freshman right-hander Matt Myers (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after allowing just three hits and one run in 5.0 innings. Senior Tim Pyle pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Anthony Colon (0-1), who was making his first start of the season, was charged with the loss after allowing five runs – two earned – in 4.0 innings.
CCNY struck first after Tavarez started off the game with a double down the right field line. Back-to-back ground outs saw the Mustangs trade outs for runs early on in the contest as Tavarez came around to score on a Sasloff grounder to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Stevenson tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on three hits before taking a 4-1 lead in the third frame after a three-run inning. The Mustangs added three insurance runs late in the game, plating two in the fifth and one in the sixth to sweep the doubleheader.
The Beavers take a short break and return to action next Saturday as CCNY faces Rutgers-Camden at 12 p.m.
