HUNTINGDON, Pa. – CUA split a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata on Friday, downing the Eagles 8-0 in game one, before dropping a 2-0 decision in the nightcap. Robin Mowatt threw a complete game, one-hitter to earn the win in the day's first game, but the Cards committed five errors in the second game and were unable to generate any runs.
In game number-one, CUA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Charlie Dillon walked with one out and moved down to second on a wild pitch. Mark Kalokitis then brought in the Cardinals first run with a RBI double to left center.
Nick Clary was next and he reached on an error, and after Chris McCloud was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. A fielder's choice brought in run number-two, and an Eagles error allowed the third run to cross.
The lead reached five in the 2nd inning when CUA scored two more runs. Wes Stonelake, Dan Hinchcliff and DeToro all reached on singles to load the bases, and Dillon followed with an infield single, which plated Stonelake to make it 4-0.
Juniata was able to get Kalokitis to bounce into a double play, but Hinchcliff came across on the play with CUA's fifth run.
CUA finished its scoring with three runs in the 6th to seal the win. Hinchcliff drew a one-out walk and DeToro followed with a double. Dillon then brought both runs home with a double to left.
Dillon eventually came around on a Juniata error to give the Cards a comfortable eight-run advantage.
Mowatt did the rest, striking out two, allowing only one hit and walking no one on the afternoon. He improved to 4-1 with the win.
Joe Sforza took the loss for the home team, allowing seven earned runs in six innings of action.
In the nightcap, Juniata scored its two runs in the 1st inning. Ben Mersky led off with a single, and a CUA error allowed him to move all the way over to third. A single by Dan Gray then brought home Mersky and Chris Sinisi to give the Eagles all the runs they would need.
CUA put the leadoff hitter on in the 3rd, but was never able to advance him past second base.
In the 4th, the Cardinals threatened again, loading the bases with two outs, before Brendan Breslin flew out to center.
In the 7th, Marc Hanna led off with a single and DeToro added a single of his own with one out. With two outs, Dillon walked to load the bases, but Clary grounded out to second, ending the game.
Kevin Farley suffered the loss in game number-two, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings of work. Chris Fulton was the winner, after he went 6.2 innings, struck out one and did not allow any runs.
On Saturday, CUA and Juniata finish their three-game set with a single, nine-inning game beginning at noon.
