CLAREMONT — Occidental catcher Victor Munoz had a day at the plate and Devon DeRaad hit a Grand slam — his eighth home run of the season — as the Occidental baseball team crushed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 12-2 in seven innings at Bill Arce Field on Saturday.
Oxy takes Game 2 of the series, improving to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in SCIAC play, while earning its sixth win in a row and ninth in its last 10 games.
CMS falls to 0-14 and 0-8.
DeRaad blasted his shot in the top of the seventh and the Tigers rallied for seven runs on six hits in the inning to put the game out of reach.
Munoz, who has thrown out 10 runners in 11 games this season, went 3 for 4 with an RBI-double and two runs scored.
A.J. Libunao, Jake Chambers, Jonathan Wong, Johnathan Brooks and Walker Marks all went 2 for 4.
Oxy starting pitcher Nolan Watson earned his third win of the season in four starts, giving up two earned runs with four strike outs, in all seven innings pitched.
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the first. Brooks drove in Libunao with an RBI-single to center field and then Wong doubled to left, bringing in Munoz and Brooks.
CMS got a run back in the bottom of the third. Jackson Umberger led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nicholas Lillie and then scored on a single to right by Michael Gose.
The Stags added a second run in the fourth as Jack Witte led off the inning with a solo home run to right. Watson settled back in after to sit down three of the next four batters and keep the 3-2 lead headed into the fifth.
Libunao, Chambers and Munoz hit back-to-back-back doubles to extend Oxy's lead to 5-2 in the fifth. Libunao started the rally, then Chambers drove him in and Munoz brought home Chambers. Wong nearly added a fourth double and third run, but Gose made a diving catch in center to end the inning.
Next Game: Oxy looks to complete its second consecutive SCIAC sweep, facing CMS in Game 3 on Saturday afternoon.
