NORTHBORO, Mass. – MIT banged out six extra-base hits, including three home runs, as part of an 11-hit attack that carried the Engineers past Emerson College, 6-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball contest this afternoon. Junior Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound for the Engineers with a strong eight-inning performance.
Emerson (0-14, 0-3 NEWMAC) took advantage of an error in the top of the first to break out on top in the contest. Sophomore Mitch Morrmann (Hollywood, Fla.) led off the game and hit a comebacker to Wang, who's throw to first pulled the first baseman off the bag. He then advanced to third on a passed ball and a base hit before senior Zach Dean (Vero Beach, Fla.) delivered him with a one-out single to center.
After the run in the first Wang was in control, allowing just one hit over the next five innings. He finished the day allowing just two unearned runs on five hits while striking out three as he improved to 3-0 on the season. MIT's offense gave Wang a bit more cushion with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Senior Reid Bishop (Cypress, Texas) brought home the run in the fourth with an RBI single while Drago scored in the fifth on a passed ball.
Emerson closed the gap to a pair of runs in the seventh with a single tally. Freshman Joe Jacobs (Concord, Mass.) led off and singled to center, moving to second on a ground out. Moorman then beat out an infield hit to third, with the throw to first getting away, allowing junior Steven Cameron (Lansdale, Pa.), who had come in to run for Jacobs, to score.
That would be it for the Lions, as Wang got two more ground outs to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth the Engineers put it away when senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Cornwell started the inning with back-to-back jacks that made it 6-2. Senior Rob Bertucci (Belleville, Ill.) came on to finish up on the mound in the ninth and retired the side in order to put the game in the win column for MIT.
Cornwell had a 4-for-4 day for MIT, with Filiere picking up a pair of hits and driving in two for the Engineers. Jacobs led Emerson with a pair of hits. Freshman Henry Schwartz (Queens, N.Y.) started and went all the way for the Lions, giving up 11 hits over his eight innings while striking out one.
