Thiel takes game three against Thomas More in extra innings

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Thiel College baseball team took down the Thomas More Saints 7-6 in 10 innings in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest Sunday afternoon.

Thiel got out to an early advantage when Trent Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Matt Elko. Thomas More regained the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Zach Fardo two-run home run.

Thiel tied up the game with two outs in the top of the fourth inning when Brian Genco hit his third solo home run of the series. Thiel extended their lead to three over Thomas More in the top of the seventh inning. Thiel loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning and Josh Doody doubled home Dan Koller and Nick Fowkes. Bryan Mitchell followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Smith from third.

Thiel added another run in the top of the eighth when Fowkes hit his first collegiate home run. Thomas More responded by tying the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings.

After Daniel Patrice singled and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder, Fowkes hit a sacrifice bunt to move Patrice to third base. Elko knocked a RBI single to score Patrice from third to give Thiel the 8-7 lead.

Riley Schwertz struck out the side in the bottom of the tenth inning to seal the Thiel victory and pick up his fourth win of the season.

Elko, Doody and Patrice each had two hits for Thiel while Fowkes scored twice in the victory.

The Tomcats (12-6, 1-2 PAC) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats in a PAC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
