Spring trips continue on Friday

In the final game of the Gene Cusic Classic Cameron Stadele pitched a complete game shutout as the Merchant Marine Mariners took a 6-0 victory in the second game of a Friday doubleheader. Coast Guard edged Merchant Marine in the opening game, 11-9, in a slugfest that also featured sloppy play on both sides. USMMA stole four bases in the double dip while Stadele, Nicholas Kopacka, and Jake Martin all finished the day with three RBI.

Brad Burkardt and Grant Krally combined for six RBI, and Cary Gerhardt tossed 8 scoreless innings as the Bearcat seniors led the team to a 14-0 win over Clark. Burkardt was 2-for-5 with a home run, triple, and 4 RBI. He scored three times. Krally went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Gerhardt scattering five hits with seven strikeouts.  He faced only three batters over the minimum, thanks to a pair of pickoffs at first base.

Minn-Morris and Carleton split a doubleheader with the Carls winning 8-2 in game one and the Cougars picking up the nightcap. Game two proved to be a pitchers duel that went extra inning before the Cougars picked up the 2-1 walk-off win on Neil Arvold's single in the tenth. Dallas Coleman went 9.1 innings, giving up just one run on two hits in game two. It was the first career win for Minn-Morris head coach Grant Harding.

Seniors Jeff Lynch and Ryan Zakszeski combined for six hits, four RBIs and four runs to lead Johns Hopkins to a resounding 12-3 victory over Rutgers-Newark at the JHU Baseball Diamond. Hopkins pounced on Rutgers-Newark early and never looked back as it scored three runs in the first inning on three consecutive RBI doubles by Lynch, Mike Denlinger and Zakszeski.

In the Lewis & Clark Pioneers first game of their spring trip, they defeated Iowa Wesleyan 6-4, earning their first win of the 2013 season. The Pioneers Kyle Tibbett earned the win for the Pioneers. Jake Costantino's triple in the ninth scored Michael Kinkenon, who tripled earlier, drove in the game winning run.

Freshman Alex Venditti smacked a pair of home runs as WPI split a non-conference doubleheader with regional rival Keene State at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Florida.  WPI took the opener 3-1 while the Owls, who have participated in two of the last three NCAA Tournaments, won the nightcap 6-5.

Senior right fielder Nick Gentili was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and sophomore Jake Bruml threw a complete-game shutout as Pomona-Pitzer captured a 10-0 win over Whittier at Alumni Field. The game also featured some highlight-reel defense in center field from senior Erik Munzer, who helped Bruml record his shutout with a stellar catch.

Much like spring itself, John Carroll is riding a heat wave toward bigger and better things. The bats came alive, the arms followed and now the gloves are joining the fun as the Blue Streaks won their fourth in a row with a convincing 7-1 triumph over Widener in nine innings at George Brett Field in sunny Fort Myers, Florida. Mitchell Herringshaw led the offensive attack with a 4-5 performace that included two RBI.

A gutsy complete-game, four-hit outing from Louisiana College junior right-hander Madison Lachney was enough to propel the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory over ASC foe LeTourneau in Longview, TX.  The junior pitcher tossed nine innings, striking out eight Yellow Jacket batters and giving up only one run to earn the win, moving him to 3-0 on the season.

Led by senior pitcher Eliot Smith, Redlands topped Cal Lutheran at The Yard, 7-3.  In a rainy affair, the Bulldogs jumped on top early and never looked back en route to the important SCIAC victory. Sensational from the hill, Smith went 8.0 innings while distributing six hits and allowing three runs, only one of which was earned.  He also registered 10 strikeouts in his third win of the campaign.

Susquehanna split with Penn State Behrend.  The Crusdaers shut out the Lions 4-0 before falling 5-3. In game one, Susquehanna starter Spencer Hotaling was lights out.  He held the Behrend offense in check, throwing a complete game shutout with just three hits allowed. Justin Wood threw 6.1 innings for Behrend, allowing just two runs on three hits and one walk. The sophomore hurler struck out a career-high seven batters in the win.

Occidental has been rolling as of late and took care of business for its fifth win in a row, beating Caltech 4-1 in a sloppy series opener at a soggy Anderson Field. Junior Alec Strain got the start and picked up the win for the Tigers. He shut out the Beavers in five innings of work, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out four.

Thomas More defeated Suffolk, 10-5, on its final day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, Florida. Thomas More scored one in the second, one in the seventh, seven in the eighth and one in the ninth, while holding the Rams to one in the first, two in the fifth and two in the eighth for the 10-5 victory.

Will Edwards battled through six innings and picked up his first win in conference as the Majors downed Hendrix 12-3. The Majors blew the doors off the game in the seventh, hanging a crooked six-spot on the board. After the Warriors had cut the game to 4-3, the Majors put together a six-hit inning that featured a parade of Warrior pitchers.

Mary Hardin-Baylor fought back to send the game to extra innings, but a costly fielding error allowed the game-winning runs to score as the Cru fell to Texas Lutheran 4-2 in 12 innings in Belton.

Moravian swept Muskingum at the Snowbird Classic. The Greyhounds took the first game of the day by a score of 5-1, and they rallied to win the second game by a score of 6-4.

A doubleheader sweep over Northland (Minn.) highlighted an impressive start for  Marian at the Kino Sports Complex. The Sabres defeated the LumberJacks, 4-2, in game one and, 19-2, in game two. Junior Sam Forkert took a no-hitter into the third inning of game one before giving up a pair of third-inning runs. He would deny any further damage en route to the complete game victory. Bryce Taylor followed with a solid start, going five strong innings in a rout over Northland. Chad Langley went 5-for-7 in both games combined with a double and four RBIs.

Elizabethtown split a pair with Westminster (Pa.) in its final games in Fort Pierce. Matt Ruth struck out eight and Ryan Haggerty drove in two as the Blue Jays won game one by a score of 5-4. In game two, Sean Jones hit his first career home run, but Westminster emerged with a 4-1 win. Jones was 4-for-6 on the day to lead Elizabethtown.

Neumann defeated Thiel 8-1 in non-conference action in Ft. Myers, Fla. Joey Armata went 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Matt Sheneman was 2-for-2 and had three RBI. Matt Spillman went 6.1 innings and allowed one run and struck out five for the win.
