New England teams see action today

Kyle McKelvey knocked in the game-winning run when he drew a bases-loaded walk and Steve Ambrosino added some insurance runs with a bases-clearing triple as Western New England scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to defeat host Farmingdale State in the opening game of the Long Island Spring Classic on Friday afternoon.

Joe O'Connor laced an RBI triple in the bottom of the 11th to break a one-all deadlock and send No. 10 Kean past Neumann 2-1. With one out in the 11th, senior Nick Ramagli got things started with a single before O'Connor lined a 0-2 pitch into the gap, plating the winning run.

Gordon and Centenary (N.J) split a doubleheader at host Centenary. Gordon used a four-run seventh to take game one 7-6 as Nick Catallanotto got the win for the Fighting Scots after three innings of work. The Cyclones came out ahead, 5-1,  in the second game behind a solid start by Joe Frankosky for the split.
Junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Erickson tossed a three-hit complete shutout Friday to lead the Eagles to 2-0 win over Hardin-Simmons but lost the second game when the Cowboys turned things around with a 15-1 win.  Jordan Dotson earned the win, scattering six hits over six innings. Three relievers followed, each pitching a no-hit inning to preserve the win.

Joseph Odom drove in four runs and Craig Brown pitched seven scoreless innings to lead  Huntingdon in a 5-1 win over Emory at Posey Field. Odom was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, four RBIs and two runs scored and Grant Brown was 3-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base to lead Huntingdon at the plate. Craig Brown picked up the win, scattering six hits, striking out seven and walking one in seven innings.

Johns Hopkins exploded for five runs in the third inning to take a lead it would never relinquish as it defeated Messiah, 7-3, in the season opener at the JHU Baseball Diamond. Blue Jay senior catcher Ryan Zakszeski went 3-for-4 in the contest.

Hampden-Sydney scored eight runs in the second inning en route to a 13-3 victory over Franklin & Marshall for the team's fourth consecutive win. Andrew Tucker and John Lloyd were impressive in the effort, each recording three hits. Tucker went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and an RBI; Lloyd was 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run.

Arcadia won their home opener defeating the Swarthmore Garnet, 7-1. The Knights jumped out to a quick lead scoring three in the first and the pitching did the rest. Three Knights (Brandon Martin, Mike Nessel and George Pagan) each had two hits and the four Arcadia pitchers scattered six hits.

Averett sophomore Taylor Davis smashed a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Cougars' only run, but it held up in a 1-0 win over conference rival Ferrum in the opener of the three-game series at Owen-Fulton Field. With two outs in the fourth inning, Davis crushed a ball over the fence in right field to break the scoreless tie. Averett's pitching and defense held off several scoring opportunities by Ferrum the rest of the way as the Cougars won for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Greensboro defeated LaGrange 2 -1. The Pride used a fast start and strong pitching to propel them to the victory. Greensboro was led by Steven Pfeiffer with three hits.

Berry opened Southern Athletic Association play in fine fashion as the Vikings won at Hendrix, 14-8. The visiting Vikings outhit the Warriors 14-11 and took advantage of four Hendrix errors.

Sophomore Cody Whitley pitched eight innings and struck out nine while junior Garrett Methvin went 3-for-4 at the plate with home run as the LeTourneau YellowJackets defeated the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru 6-2 at Conrad-Vernon Field.

York got a great pitching performance and some timely hitting to hand Richard Stockton their first loss of the season, 5-3, on a cold and blustery afternoon in Galloway, N.J.

Defiance topped Calvin, 6-5 and 7-5, to start the 2013 campaign on a strong note. The Jackets earned a thrilling walk-off victory in the opener, before leading throughout the nightcap of the doubleheader sweep over the Knights.

Ithaca began its season with a 7-1 victory over Old Westbury in a game played at Baseball Heaven on Long Island. The Bombers got off to a fast start and went on to the victory. Colby Gee and Vinny Gneo each hit two-run homers in the first inning to put the Bombers out in front, and that was all that was needed for starting pitcher Pat Lemmo, who worked the complete-game victory allowing only one run.
