Covenant wins, St. Thomas splits

Scott Gillespie went 4-for-4 and Covenant used a 12-run, 14-hit attack to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan 12-6 in game one of a three-game USA South series. Jordan Lester earned his second win as he went six innings in relief and surrendered one run on three hits.

Buena Vista got the season off on the right foot , by picking up a pair of thrilling one-run contests, with a 2-1 victory to begin the day against ninth-ranked St. Thomas and a 8-7 win over UW-La Cross. The Beavers got a stellar pitching performance from their ace, Jon Ringblom in the opener with the Tommies, as the senior righthander went eight innings, scattering eight hits, allowing just the one earned run, while striking out eight and not walking a batter.

Texas-Dallas handed LeTourneau their first loss of the season, a 4-1 win for the Comets. This breaks an eight game win streak for the YellowJackets. The Comets took the lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Matt Olszewski and a two-out RBI double by Jimmy Norris.

Saint Joseph's (Maine) registered 20 hits in a mercy-rule shortened 18-8 victory over Concordia-Moorhead in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Junior catcher Joe Coyne went 3-5 with three runs, two doubles and a pair of RBI in the Monks' season-opening victory. Concordia-Moorhead lost to Capital 7-6 earlier in the day.

Southern Virginia earned their first victory of the season with a 12-4 win over Southern Vermont.  In the home opener for the Knights, CJ Andrus, and Tyler King had three hits apiece to pace the offense. The winning pitcher, Mitch Mantle, pitched into the sixth inning before handing off the game to a parade of four relievers. Sal Sciara led Southern Vermont with a pair of hits.

Kenny Georgius is 2-0 with 13 strikeouts in two starts this season.

Frostburg received a strong outing from senior Kenny Georgius to stay unbeaten through five games in 2014. The Bobcats defeated Pitt-Greensburg 5-7. Georgius surrendered only one run and recorded six strikeouts in six innings.

Mary Hardin-Baylor broke open a tight game with a six-run seventh inning and the Cru rolled to an 8-3 victory over Texas-Tyler in the 2014 home opener in Belton. Ian Ekery threw a complete-game, seven-hitter for the Cru to move to 3-0 on the season. He struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

Alma concluded their 2014 spring trip to Florida as they took two games from Hanover. With the wins, the Scots will bring home a overall record of 6-2, their best start in years. Game one went to Alma by a score of 3-1, while the nightcap saw the Scots nip the Panthers by a 3-2 margin.

Earlham won its second straight with a 4-2 victory over Spalding. Nate Hube went seven innings on the mound at Derby City Field to earn his first win of the year. Hube gave up two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. T.J. Plummer earned the save. It was Plummer's first save of the season and he extended his Earlham career record to eight.
