Spring brings us Monday sweeps

Spencer Byers struck out 11 batters and picked up the game two win in the Lords' doubleheader sweep of Northland.

Kenyon got an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore Spencer Byers and some clutch hitting from senior Nate Lotze to sweep Monday's doubleheader with the Northland Lumberjacks. Kenyon took game one by a 6-4 count and then closed out the day with a 16-11 win in game two.

Freshman starting pitcher Marc Iseneker tossed five no-hit innings and struck out eight batters in his collegiate debut, as St. John Fisher cruised past Trine 11-3 in Winter Haven at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Through the first four games of the season, Fisher's starting pitchers have combined for 19 inning of action, allowing no runs, three hits and 27 strikeouts.

Mike Comerford blasted a grand slam to help Tim Burek earn his first collegiate victory as Misericordia beat Immaculata, 15-3, in Fort Pierce, Fla. Burek worked six innings without allowing an earned run to pick up the win.

Mary Hardin-Baylor opened up a tie game with a three-run fifth inning and then held on as the Cru posted a 6-3 victory over DeSales in San Antoni

Linfield turned a two-error second inning into four runs, which made the difference as the Wildcats scored an 8-3 victory over Pacific in NWC at Chuck Bafaro Stadium. The two defensive miscues allowed the Wildcats to put together a two-out rally, neutralizing a two-run frame for the Boxers in the bottom of the first.  Pacific scored one more run in the bottom of the second, but did not have a hit after the second and only one base runner over the final seven innings.

Senior Luke Yogerst threw a two-hit shutout in the season-opener to lead MSOE to a doubleheader split with Clark in Florida. The Raiders opened their season with a 3-0 victory on the strength of Yogerst's arm, but the Cougars responded with a strong outing on the mound for a 1-0 victory in game two.

Senior Colin Weiss got the no-decision for the Pride, striking out five over 5.2 innings and allowing four runs and seven hits.

Widener stayed red hot on its Florida trip by posting its third straight victory, 6-5 over John Carroll in Fort Myers. With the contest tied 4-4 in the seventh, Justin Healey reached on an error to lead off the last of the frame, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. With two outs in the inning, Bob Barnett had an infield single that plated Healey for the go-ahead run.

Rose-Hulman held off a late charge by St. Vincent to earn a 10-9 victory in game two of the annual baseball spring trip to Florida. St. Vincent rallied, down 10-5, with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to move within 10-9, before sophomore Alex McNally pitched a scoreless ninth for his first college save.

Manchester's offense helped the Spartans end their stay at The Ripken Experience on a high note. The Spartans hammered nine extra base hits, including seven home runs, as part of a 25-hit attack that helped them top Muhlenberg 11-7 and Eastern 7-6. Their back-to-back victories helped them close their trip at 4-2.

La Roche split a doubleheader with Elizabethtown, losing 1-0, and winning 6-2. Jesse Bauer and Walt Hadjuk each threw complete games.

Sophomore first baseman Simon Rosenbaum continued his torrid hitting by batting 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double, but it wasn't enough as Redlands built a big lead early and held on for a 17-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

After starting off the season with a perfect 4-0 record, Manhattanville lost its first two contests of the season to Staten Island and York (Pa.) by final scores of 17-8 and 13-12, respectively.
