Lynx, Pirates deny teams wins in openers

Rhodes picked up a win in a neutral site contest against Wheaton (Ill.), 10-6 on Friday. The Rhodes pitching staff had a solid day on the hill, with Adam Putman picking up his third win of the season in five innings of work. The junior struck out an impressive seven batters. No. 6 Webster also dealt the Thunder a loss with a 6-2 set back. Jeff Kammer ignited the Webster offense with a first inning homer, and C. J. Lee shut the Thunder down on the mound for the Gorloks.

Southwestern stranded 10 baserunners butdid not prevent a 5-2 win over Fontbonne in Memphis. Jarod Bogosian and Jake Pawelek went 1-2 from the plate with one walk to lead Southwestern offensively. Jeremy Rice earned the win going six innings, allowing one run, unearned, on one hit while walking two and four strikeouts.

No. 18 Birmingham-Southern escaped with a 6-5 win over No. 23 Adrian as the Bulldogs' final out came with the bases loaded. BSC's closer David Bourbonnais struggled to keep Adrian off the scoreboard in the final innings, getting a game ending strikeout to earn the win.

LeTourneau began its defense of its ASC Tournament title with a doubleheader at Louisiana College on Friday in Pineville. The YellowJackets split a twinbill with the host Wildcats, losing game one, 1-0 and winning the nightcap, 7-4.

Texas-Dallas' bats came to life Friday afternoon to help the Comets salvage the final game of their opening ASC with an 8-1 win over East Texas Baptist. The Comets knocked five ETBU pitchers around for 12 hits, scoring in five different innings to top the Tigers, who pulled out a couple of one-run wins over Texas-Dallas to open the series on Thursday.

Castleton concluded its Texas road trip with a 6-2 victory over Austin behind a strong pitching performance from southpaw Steve Jurkiewicz and some timely hitting at Baker Field. The sophomore hurler set the tone early, giving up just one unearned run while allowing three hits and striking out three in 6.0 innings of work for his first victory of the season. Offensively Nick Swim went 3-for-5 while Soren Pelz-Walsh and two doubles with three RBI. Jim Buckley added a pair of hits, including a two-run homer.

Eric Morell threw a complete game three-hitter to lead LaGrange to a 9-0 win over Huntingdon at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The game was the first of a three-game USA South series between the Panthers and the Hawks. Morell is the first Panther pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since Eric Medlock beat Mt. Aloysius 9-0 on Feb. 24, 2009.

La Verne went 15-for-32 at the plate to rout Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 20-4, at Arce Field. Matt Caselli led the way for the Leopards with a 4-for-5 performance. Nolan Henley, Zach Quinones and Ben White each added two hits and combined for eight RBI.

Backed by another strong start from Garrett Kriston and a season-high in runs, Covenant took a 9-2 victory over Piedmont at Loudermilk Field. Kriston allowed an unearned run in the first inning, but followed that with six scoreless frames to pick up his second win of the year.

Berry split a doubleheader vs. North Park in frigid conditions at William R. Bowdoin Field. Snow flurries occurred and temperatures were in the mid-20s throughout the games. Berry took game one, 11-3. Visiting North Park prevailed in the nightcap, 6-5. In game one, Grant Perkins went 4-for-5 to lead Berry in the opener. North Park shelled out 12 hits in game two and scored two or more runs in both the second and third innings. Senior Matt Peterson earned the win on the mound as he tossed 1.1 innings in relief. He fanned two batters and walked one in the effort.

Beneath gray, rainy skies the No. 8 Cal Lutheran baseball team returned to action against Puget Sound of the Northwest Conference. The home team took the only game of a scheduled doubleheader by a score of 7-3 despite heavy rains falling over the last three innings.
