Rose-Hulman engineers win, Loggers get upset

Rose-Hulman starter Andrew Stull allowed just one single over eight innings, and the Fightin' Engineers offense scored early in a 6-1 victory over Mount Union on Sunday afternoon. Stull allowed just one single, in the seventh inning, to shutout the Purple Raiders for eight frames.  The right-hander added eight strikeouts and walked just one batter to move to 1-0 on the season. Offensively, Rose-Hulman scored four times in the fifth inning and twice in the second to gain a safe lead.  Seven different players had one hit each for the Engineers, with senior Josh Hoeing and junior Caleb Kissel leading the effort with a double a piece.

Weather continues to play a major role in the D-III schedule on Sunday as a dozen games with Top 25 teams were postponed or canceled. Even when the games could be started, many could not be completed. Kean lost a 1-0 lead in their game with FDU-Florham when the game had to be stopped in the first inning.

On Saturday, Puget Sound could not get the key hit as they dropped a 15 inning game to Linfield.  The Logger's offense made sure they had enough runs on Sunday as they upset No. 6 Linfield 10-1 and 13-8 in a NWC doubleheader. Nath Backes contributed six hits on the day for the Loggers to lead the offensive onslaught.

Neumann was finally able to get the 2015 campaign underway and picked up a 4-1 win against Clark. Kristian DeLuzio threw a one hitter over eight innings to get the win. Anthony Stricker pitched the ninth inning for the save.

Ohio Northern opened its 2015 campaign with a pair of one-run games with Widener in Fort Meyers, Fla. ONU took the first game 1-0 and fell in the second game 3-2. In game one, junior Nick Eltzroth was the story as he spun a three-hit shutout, striking out seven. Greg McDonough's seventh inning triple scored all three runs for Widener in game two as the Pride hung on for the win.

Saint Mary's (Minn.), playing the first of 10 games during its week-long stay in Florida, banged out 14 hits and scored 11 runs in rolling to an 11-0 game one win over Milwaukee School of Engineering at Lake Myrtle Park. It was more of the same in the nightcap, as the Cardinals plated another nine runs in completing the sweep with a 9-2 victory over the Raiders.

After letting a seven run lead slip away on Saturday, Otterbein did the same in their 9-8 win over Newbury. The Nighthawks scored seven runs in the ninth to knot the score, only to see the Cardinals walk-off in the tenth inning when Stephan Hernon singled with the bases loaded with no outs.

Trine and Anna Maria opened their seasons splitting their Florida doubleheader. Eddie Tomich threw a one-hitter for his first-career shutout. The senior ace of the Thunder staff carved up the Anna Maria lineup, striking out 10 batters and walking just one. In game two, the Amcats overcame a 3-1 deficit with a five-run sixth inning that put Anna Maria up for good.

Alvernia posted big innings in its final at-bat twice to sweep a season-opening doubleheader from John Carroll in non-conference action. In game one, the Crusaders scored five times in the seventh to erase a four run deficit for a 7-6 win in their season opener. Alvernia then needed to get back on the comeback trail in game two. A four run sixth was good enough to give the home team a 4-2 victory.

Gunnar Hollier drove in two runs and Dillon Stavinoha hurled three scoreless frames out of the bullpen, as Concordia (Texas) came from behind to defeat DeSales 4-2 in non-conference action at Tornado Field. The Tornados pushed their winning streak to six games, thanks to strong performances by six pitchers and timely hitting.
