Pitching beats hitting on Wednesday

Pitt-Bradford and Hilbert opened the D-III day with a pitchers duel as Hilbert's Justin Hulbert and UPB's Ryan Northcott matched wits. Both ended up with a complete game eight-hitter but Northcott got the benefit of a last inning RBI single by Jay Clinger to bring home a 3-2 win. Hilbert took game two 11-10 behind Paul Wujek's cycle.

Ramapo starter Kyle Haag was given a three run cushion and he proceeded to limit the Farmingdale Rams to seven hits over nine innings as the Roadrunners won their first game since March 22. Haag allowed two runs (one earned) and struckout ten batters.

Fernando Burgos pitched eight innings of three-hit ball and UMass Boston supported its freshman starter by hitting three home runs in a 10-1 win over Western New England. Burgos allowed more than one baserunner in an inning just once, retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced, and struck out four Golden Bears en route to his second collegiate win. Junior Dave Murphy drove in five runs on the first two homers ever hit at Monan Park, including a fourth-inning grand slam. Dan Mantoni drove out UMB's other homer in the eighth.

FDU-Florham defeated No. 10 Rutgers-Camden 5-1 as the Devils have gone 4-0-1 over their last five non-conference games, including a win and tie over top 10 teams. Tyler Keef allowed one run in his five innings of work. A quartet of relievers backed his start with four scoreless innings.

Nick Di Benedetto and four relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as nationally second-ranked Cortland defeated visiting Cazenovia, 8-0, in a non-league matchup. Di Benedetto earned his first win of the season. He allowed four hits and two walks and struck out five in five innings. Jason Martin, Jesse Winters and Ryan Koval each tossed a hitless and scoreless inning, and Ryan Smith allowed two hits in the ninth but escaped a jam to preserve the shutout.

It was a staff day for Tufts as the Jumbos used seven pitchers in a 21-3 win over Mass-Maritime. Speros Varinos, the second pitcher of the day earned the win as five members of the Jumbo rotation has scoreless stints in the blowout win.

Dan Fox pitched the D'Youville Spartans to their first win in 2016 on Wednesday.

Dan Fox's two-hitter led D'Youville to a 4-1 game one win over Medaille in a AMCC doubleheader. The Mavericks came back with a gem of their own as Jared McStine spun a six-hit complete game win. Medaille took game two 4-0 and a split on the day.

Hampden-Sydney picked up their second win in as many days, shutting out the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets 3-0. Hampden-Sydney had seven hits to Randolph-Macon's six, while the Tiger defense was able to strand ten base runners for the Jackets. Eric O'Brien, Teddy West, and Dylan Gonzales combined for the shutout.

Penn State Behrend took home their second I-90 cup after defeating Fredonia 3-0 in their first meeting of the season. The Lion pitching staff combined for their second team shutout of the season. Sean Rutkosky picked up his first collegiate win in his first collegiate start, going 6.0 strong innings surrendering five hits and striking out three. Brady Kress put in two-thirds of an inning with one hit and a walk. Scott Sada came in to finish the final 2.1 and earn his first collegiate save. Sada only gave up one hit and he struck out a batter as well.

Trailing by one going into the seventh inning, Southern Vermont opened up for five runs before finishing off an 8-1 non-conference victory at Eastern Nazarene's Adams Field. SVC's offense struggled early on as the Lions' starting pitcher had a no-hitter going after the sixth. That changed quickly in the last three innings. Freshman right-hander Joe Braim had a stellar performance on the rubber to pick up his first collegiate win, going eight strong innings as he let up just the one run on eight hits and struck out four Lion batters. Classmate Ryan Richards tossed the ninth, surrendering one meaningless hit to finish off the day.
