TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball gave head coach Jerry Haugen '76 his 800th win with a sweep of Allegheny (Pa.), 13-4 and 12-3, on Monday, March 19.

Haugen has an 800-638-5 career record in 41 seasons.

SJU (13-2 overall) scored a run or more in 11 of the day's 13 innings and batted .423 (30-for-71) with 13 extra-base hits on the day.

Junior outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) led SJU with five hits (5-for-10) in the doubleheader, while sophomore outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) recorded four hits and five runs scored. Senior catcher Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) and junior centerfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) drove in four runs apiece.

Saint John's 13, Allegheny 4
SJU scored a run or more in every inning except for the first and recorded seven extra-base hits, 16 total, in game one. The Johnnies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to three two-out runs. Sophomore designated hitter Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) was hit by a pitch, sophomore shortstop Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) singled and Schleper smacked a two-run double. Senior second baseman Brennan Swan (Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace) reached on a bunt single and Schleper scored on the pitcher's throwing error to first base.

Wingerd started the third inning with a double, advanced to third on a bunt single from Jackson and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior first baseman Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) to give SJU a 4-0 lead.

Schleper walked with one out in the fourth inning, moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on Swan's double. Terres led off the fifth with a triple and junior third baseman Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0.

The Johnnies recorded three straight singles to start the sixth inning before the first pitch of his at-bat hit Jackson for an RBI. Meland brought in a run on an infield single with one out and Stock tallied an RBI with a fielder's choice. An infield single from Gruber gave SJU an even 10-0 lead.

The Gators (2-6 overall) erased the shutout with three straight hits, a pair of singles and a pinch-hit triple, to start the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-out, RBI single to made it 10-3.

Ulrich reached on an error to start the seventh and scored on an RBI triple from Wingerd, who scored on a one-out single from Terres. Stock ended SJU's scoring with a two-out double.

Junior Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win. He allowed the three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks in six innings. Freshman Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) made his collegiate debut and struck out two, allowing one run and two hits, in the seventh inning.

Saint John's 12, Allegheny 3
SJU gained another fast start with three runs in the bottom of the first, but left the bases loaded. Jackson brought in Ulrich, who started the Johnnies with a single and stolen base, with a fielder's choice. Sophomore infielder Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) tallied a two-out, RBI single and Gruber followed with an RBI double.

Allegheny took advantage of two SJU errors and scored two runs in the top of the second inning, but Wingerd singled with one out in the bottom half of the inning and scored on Jackson's RBI double.

Jackson's 125th career hit was a two-out, two-run homer that gave SJU a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer was his first of the season and fifth of his career. Jackson is four hits behind Matt Butorac '11 for 10th in school history.

The Gators manufactured a two-out run in the fifth, but SJU gained it right back in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out tally of its own courtesy of an RBI triple from Schleper. SJU was not done, however. Swan scored Schleper with an RBI single in the ensuing at-bat to force a pitching change, but Ulrich and Wingerd followed with back-to-back doubles to give SJU a seven-run lead (10-3).

Schleper coaxed a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth and Swan followed with a hit-by-pitch to end the home team's scoring.

Junior Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) improved to 2-0 with the win. He surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits in five innings. Gruber and classmate Taylor Fourre (Albany, Minn.) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Johnnies end their Tucson trip with a nine-inning game against Buena Vista (Iowa) at 9 a.m. MST Tuesday, March 20.
