Offense propels Illinois Wesleyan and Texas-Dallas

The Pacific Lutheran Lutes brought the lumber to Oregon to open the 2021 season, smashing host Linfield 14-4 on Friday afternoon.

Illinois Wesleyan put 26 runs on the board in a doubleheader sweep of Greenville but Texas Dallas did the feat one run better in a single game. The Comets scorched Howard Payne for 27 in their opener of a three game set this weekend.

Illinois Wesleyan scored a combined 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Greenville Friday afternoon on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. IWU (2-0) cruised to a 12-1 victory in game one and a 14-2 run-rule win in the night cap. The Titans overpowered the Panthers (0-2) in the opener, as IWU cranked out 12 runs on 19 hits, while Greenville produced one run on four hits. Senior starter Quinn Gudaitis was exceptional on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits over six innings of work. Senior Eric Bennes tossed the final two frames, striking out three, while yielding one run on two hits. Evan Ranneklev's hot hitting carried over into game two, where he finished 3-for-4, a home run shy of the cycle.Senior Hunter Simon got the start, going four innings, striking out four and allowing two runs on four hits.

Texas-Dallas used two big innings to record a 27-8 season-opening road win over Howard Payne Friday afternoon to kick off a three-game American Southwest Conference series. The Comets (now 1-0, 1-0 ASC) plated seven runs in the 3rd and 13 more in the 6th as they nearly matched the program record for runs in a game (28) in Friday's lop-sided victory. UTD will close the three-game set with the host Yellow Jackets Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Don Shepard Park. Seven different UTD players record multi-hit games as the Comets  went through seven HPU pitchers in the near record-setting performance. The Comets belted three home runs homes on the afternoon, including a grand slam by Jacob Perry, while collecting 22 hits and drawing 10 walks.

A big first inning propelled the Ozark Eagles past Sul Ross State 9-1 Friday afternoon. The Eagles pounded out 14 hits and five players had multi-hit games. Luke Morrison highlighted the first inning with a two-run triple. James Cross had an RBI single in the frame and then the Eagles scored on an error to make it 4-0. In the third, Cross and Josh Stephens had RBI to increase the lead to 6-1. In the fourth, Erick Aguirre blasted a two-run homer and in the sixth Cross produced again with a RBI single. Blake Benson cruised to a complete game with three strikeouts. He had one walk and the Lobo run was earned. Cross went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Rennie Arjona went 3-for-5 with three runs, Aguirre went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Morrison went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Trey Vance went 2-for-2.

After a two-week delay to the season for the Hardin-Simmons baseball team because of weather, the Cowboys opened the season with a 6-5 walkoff win over Belhaven before falling 17-2 in the nightcap at Hunter Field.  The Cowboys Garrett Frazier had a walkoff single in the top of the seventh inning to give the Cowboys the win. Hayden Clark took the ball in the opener for the Cowboys and he worked five solid innings allowing three runs on five hits. Sam Buchkowski worked a scoreless sixth and came out for the seventh and allowed a runner that eventually scored. Grant Mitzelfelt worked the rest of the seventh and earned the win in relief. Belhaven took advantage of 15 Hardin-Simmons walks en route to a 17-2 win in the nightcap. In total, 11 different Blazers' reached base in the second game and Nathan Herron finished the game with five walks, a career high. Evan Moore was 4-for-6 with a home run a five RBIs for the Blazers. On the mound, Brett Sanchez delivered another stellar start going 7.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits. Sanchez struck out nine, tying his single-game career mark, a total he has hit twice previously. Sanchez is now 3-0 on the year with an ERA of 0.00 and 26 strikeouts in 24 innings of work. Belhaven is now 5-3 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. 

The fourth-ranked Trinity (Texas) Tigers opened up a four-game weekend series with a 3-1 win over Southwestern (Texas). Trinity got on the board with a run in the first, but Southwestern escaped a big inning after issuing three walks and committing a costly error on catcher's interference. The Tigers took the lead despite going hitless in the inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Tyler Pettit. Leadoff hitter Michael Herrera put Trinity in front 2-0 with his two-out solo homer in the bottom of the second, depositing a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left field. Brian Schaub made the most of his first hit as a Tiger, crushing a solo shot over the fence in left-center field for a 3-0 Trinity lead. Southwestern left a runner on base in each of the first five innings, but failed to get on the board against Tiger starter Garrett Aylor. The Pirates finally broke up the shutout with a pair of hits in the sixth, but a double play in the seventh erased the last baserunner of the night for the visitors. Trinity reliever Corey Cater retired all seven batters he faced to close out the final 2.2 innings of the game and seal the win.

St. Thomas (Texas) opened up their 2021 campaign as they hosted the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets. The contest was called in the fifth inning due to inclement weather, but the 9-5 lead the Celts constructed ensured them the victory. Parker Edwards would go 2-2, hitting two home runs and recording four RBIs. Hunter Pachal would also go 2-2 while driving in one run. Defensively, RHP Landon Murray would strike out seven batters in his first game with the Celts.
