UW-Eau Claire upsets UW-Whitewater

The University of Rochester is headed to its third straight Liberty league title game after defeating Clarkson University 13-8 in the conference semifinals on Wednesday evening at Towers Field. UR's victory pushes the Yellowjackets in the finals on Saturday against Union College, who defeated Ithaca 18-9, in the 4-team, single-elimination bracket.

UW-Eau Claire split their Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with No. 3 UW-Whitewater, winning 11-1 (7 innings) and falling 1-11 in game two. The victory is the program's first ranked win over a Top 25 team since their return. After a scoreless first two innings in the opener, Eau Claire got on the board with a solo home run from Anthony Pogodzinski. They added two more an inning later and extended their lead with big fifth and seventh innings. Eau Claire finished with 11 hits in game one, including three from Treichel and two each from Witte and Yaeger. In addition to their offensive output, the Blugolds got a dominant performance on the mound from Tom Ginther. He went all seven innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out eight batters. The Blugold offense slowed down in the second game and UWW took advantage, ending on the winninge side of the 11-1 score.

Senior Matt Toy went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and four runs scored to lead a relentless Union College offensive attack as the second-seeded Dutchmen advanced to the Liberty League championship game with an 18-9 victory over third-seeded Ithaca College on Wednesday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. Toy was one of many Dutchmen to have big days at the plate on Wednesday, launching a three-run homer and adding three more hits in six trips to the plate. Senior Chris O'Brien also homered and drove in three runs as part of a 2-for-5 day, while classmate Jack Koch had two hits, drove in three, scores three times and walked twice.

Second-seeded Penn State Abington defeated No. 3 Penn College, 12-4, Wednesday afternoon in the decisive game three of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) semifinal. With the result, Abington improves to 20-4 on the season while Penn College will conclude their year with a record of 10-13. The win also punches Abington's ticket to the NEAC Championship Final where they will square off against the top-seeded Lions of Penn State Harrisburg. These two sides met twice in the regular season, with both doubleheaders ending in a split. The first game of the Final is scheduled to take place on Saturday in Middletown, Pa.

Senior Evan Maday, pictured, broke open a scoreless MIAA Tournament game in the bottom of the sixth on Wednesday when he clobbered a stinger homerun over the right-centerfield fence at Boeve Stadium. The three-run round-tripper, plus an insurance run in the seventh, gave the Hope College baseball team a 4-2 victory over Trine University. The win was the Flying Dutchmen's 12th in a row and moves their record to 23-13 overall. Hope advances to play Calvin University Thursday. The Knights won their opening game on Wednesday against Albion College, also with a 4-2 score. Albion and Trine also play at Hope tomorrow as part of the four-team Pool B pod. They will compete at 1 p.m. in the back-draw of the double-elimination bracket.

Top overall seed Adrian began its three-time Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament defense on Wednesday with a convincing 13-2 victory over visiting Olivet at Nicolay Field. Fifth-year senior Gunner Rainey, the repeat MIAA Position Player of the Year, led Adrian's 16-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Seniors Thomas Miller and Sean O'Keefe as well as freshman Joe Casale added two hits apiece. On the mound, senior Trey Miller got the win to up his pitching record to 2-1. He threw two innings of scoreless relief in which he did not give up a hit nor issue a walk with two strikeouts. In other MIAA Tournament Pool A action today, fifth-seeded Alma edged No. 4 Kalamazoo 4-3. On Thursday, Adrian will host Alma at noon in the next round. Kzoo and Olivet will play each other in Adrian.

Illinois Wesleyan University extinguished the Firebirds of Carthage College, 11-7, Wednesday night at Horenberger Field. With the win, IWU upped its record to 17-20 on the season and evened the season series against Carthage at 2-2. Freshman Jacob Cyrus was stellar on the mound in the start. He struck out five over five innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Offensively, the Titans and Firebirds tied with eight hits apiece. Juniors Jared Mutter and Dominic DiLello paced the Green and White at the plate. Mutter went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, and DiLello finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

No. 24 Gustavus concluded its non-conference schedule Wednesday evening with a doubleheader split at Northwestern-St. Paul. The Gusties won game one 1-0 before falling 3-2 in the night cap. Jayce Luna got his first career start on the mound and made the most of the opportunity, tossing six shutout innings to earn the win. Luna did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, which was the only hit he allowed, finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk against 20 batters. The Gusties scored the only run of the game in the fourth as Bryce Novak and Jack Hanson hit back-to-back doubles. Those were the only two hits of the game for the Gusties. Damon Rademacher came in for the seventh inning and earned the save, his third of the season, allowing one hit but striking out the side. The Eagles broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with an RBI double, sac fly, and a run-scoring wild pitch, taking a 3-0 advantage. Gustavus got two runs back and ended the game with the winning run at the plate.

St. Scholastica got four hits from Mitchell Novak and the pitching staff held Hamline to just three hits as the Saints wrapped up the regular season with 10-0 victory in seven innings on Wednesday at Wade Stadium. This was Novak's team-best 14th multi-hit game. Dallas Miller struck out four in four innings and allowed just one hit to earn the win. Jerry Gooley, Jack Perala and Wes Kemming combined for three strikeouts and allowed just two hits over the final three innings.

Dylan Callahan went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs as Carroll University defeated North Park University 6-4 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin regular-season finale at Frame Park on Wednesday afternoon. The victory took on added significance as it was the 20th victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 14-18 in conference and 20-20 overall. It was the first time head coach Stein Rear and the Pioneers have reached the milestone 20-victory plateau since 2018 and was the program's highest winning percentage in the CCIW since 1988. Carroll entered the day in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings and awaits the final seedings for the upcoming CCIW Tournament, scheduled to begin Monday, May 17th.

Northland continued UMAC play afternoon at LumberJack Field vs. North Central (Minn.). The Jacks would win in convincing fashion in game one, winning 12-0. The Jacks would fall in game two to the Rams, 22-3. In game one, Jesse Carmona would get the start on the mound for the Jacks. The Jacks would open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, exploding for 11 runs. Carmona finished his day going 7.0 innings, allowing 0 runs, only giving up three hit. Adrian Bethel led all LumberJacks at the plate in game one, going 3X4 at the plate with 3 rbi's. After trailing early in game two to the Rams 5-0, the Jacks would get themselves on the board in the bottom of the second inning but the Rams however would widen their lead, scoring runs in the 4th and 5th innngs to lead 16-2 and go on to win 22-3.

Augustana scored in each of the first four innings Wednesday on its way to a 12-2 win over Wheaton at Lee Pfund Stadium. Sam Cregan went the distance on the mound and freshman Alex Simon reached in all six plate appearances. The complete game was the first of the season for the Vikings. Cregan allowed five hits and two runs, walked none and fanned six to improve to 4-1 on the season. Dyer (4-4) went three innings and suffered the loss. Alex Simon finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in. He also walked twice and was one of six Vikings hit by a pitch. AlecMcGinnis was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Mitchell Gattuso went 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
