NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Becoming just the second head coach in the history of Christopher Newport athletics to compile 600 career victories, John Harvell led the Captains to a 12-1 win over Gallaudet University (3-5) on Tuesday afternoon as CNU improves to 10-1 on the season. Harvell ranks in the top-50 all-time in career winning percentage by improving to 600-291-3 for a winning mark of 67.3 percent, picking up the milestone victory in just his 894th career game.

The Captains ripped 17 hits in the game against the Bison, scoring a season-high 12 runs after learning they had vaulted up to No. 18 in the most recent D3baseball.com Top 25 poll.

Harvell joins only CNU Softball coach Keith Parr as head coaches in CNU Athletics with 600 wins. Already one of only four head coaches to reach 500 wins, Harvell continues to add to his impressive ledger while improving to 12-1 all-time against Gallaudet

In the outing, CNU junior Jack Anderson (1-0) took the hill for the Captains and held the Bison to just four hits over 5.0 innings of work. After the first inning, Anderson faced the minimum with just 12 batters faced and allowed only two baserunners, both of whom were retired.

He gave way to rookies Dylan Blazer, Nate Toomey, and Jackson Gimbel to finish out the game. Blazer tossed two innings with four strikeouts and one walk in his collegiate debut. Toomey allowed one base hit in a clean eighth inning and Gimbel picked up a perfect 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

Offensively, the Captains jumped on Gallaudet with four runs in the second and two more in the third to break open a 6-1 lead. Ayden Stuffel slipped a groundball just inside the bag at third for a double to put two runners in scoring position for Drew Caroline in the bottom of the second. Caroline singled to right, plating one, and Justin Liakos followed with a hard rip up the middle to score another. Two batters later, freshman Josh Reinhold stayed hot with the bat, driving in a pair with a single into right field.

In the next inning, Brandon Cassedy kicked things off with a one-out single and then promptly stole second base. After Stuffel walked, Cassedy moved up on a fly ball, giving his teammate a chance to steal second as well. With two in scoring position, Liakos smacked another two run single into center field.

CNU tacked on a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Liakos, running his RBI total to a career-high four. He finished out the game going 4-for-4 with a run scored and 4 RBI while starting at second base. A four-run eighth would slam the door on Gallaudet as Christopher Newport came up with timely hitting against the Bison reliever. Eric Wilson and Grant Hartman led off the inning with back-to-back pinch hit singles before Cam Wallace walked to load the bases. A run came in on an error and then Caroline added an RBI single into right field. Liakos' fourth hit continued the inning and re-loaded the bases for Griffin Carroll, who earned an RBI walk in his first career plate appearance. Sam Benedict picked up an RBI HBP to finish out the scoring one batter later.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday, March 1 as they open the next month with a matchup against No. 23 Randolph-Macon (5-0). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Captains Park with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com.
